Private & Out-of-State

Transfer to a Private or Out-of-State University

Private and out-of-state universities each have their own transfer requirements, deadlines, and application steps. Students should review each university website carefully and meet with a counselor for guidance.

What You’ll Find Here

This page can help students:

  • Explore private and out-of-state options

  • Understand different application types

  • Learn about Common App

  • Request a College Report

  • Find transfer contacts and resources

Each university sets its own transfer criteria. Requirements may include minimum units, GPA, major preparation, essays, recommendations, or additional forms. Deadlines vary by school.

Most private colleges and out-of-state universities accept the Common App.   Some universities may require students to fill out the Coalition application and not the Commonapp.  If so, please review Youtube videos on how to fill out this application.

Please refer to the following when filling out the Common App application as a Foothill student:

College Report Request Form

The CommonApp College Report process is through the Admissions & Records (A&R) office.  They can email your College Report to one or more schools if you are applying to colleges/universities through the Common App.

Processing College Reports may take up to 5-7 business days.

College Report:  The “Student Section” is filled out by the student and the “College official section”is filled out by the Foothill College Admissions & Records (A & R) Office.

When you fill out the College Report Request Form, it will create and autofilll a pdf College Report for you. You will not be required to upload a College Report.

Be sure to include the following information on the College Report Request Form:

  • Last Name
  • First Name
  • Email
  • Date of Birth (MM/DD/YYYY)
  • Foothill Student ID:
  • ACCURATE emails of where you want Foothill College to email your College Reports (if you want your College Report emailed back to you, you may request that it be emailed back to you).
  • The CAID (Common App ID) is the number on the top right corner of your Common App application account
  • The Foothill College CEEB Code is 4315
  • Include how many units you have currently completed & how many units that are in-progress and what you plan to take up to the end of your time at Foothill.
  • List all colleges you’re applying to on your request. One form may list multiple colleges.
  • If your request is for a Common App College Report? Choose Yes.

Continue with this request form. No document upload required.

  • If your request is for a non-Common App (University specific) College Report. Choose No.

Continue with this same request form and upload your university’s version of their college report instead.

Important Limits (Due to High Volume of Requests)

  • List all colleges you're applying to on your request
  • Up to two requests per each Fall, Winter, and Spring term.
  • Up to one request for summer term.
  • One form may list multiple colleges, but Foothill sends only one report per school.

We strongly recommend waiting to submit a College Report Request Form until you’ve earned your desired GPA on your Foothill transcript, while still submitting your request before the university deadline.

For Universities Not Using the Common App College Report and use University specific college report forms instead:

Some universities require their own college report form, sometimes referred to as “Transfer Report” or “College Officials/Admissions Report”

These Are Some Examples:

Boston College Academic & Disciplinary Report

Cornell College Dean's Reference Form

Scoir Transfer Report

  • Obtain the university’s form
  • Complete the student section
  • Submit this College Report Request Form so Foothill (A&R) can process and email it for you after they complete their section.
  • There are no limits on how many university specific college report requests you submit — these do NOT count toward the Common App request limits above.

FERPA Release Authorization

I acknowledge that every school that I have attended may release all requested records and recommendations to colleges to which I am applying for admission.

I also understand that employees at these colleges may confidentially contact my current and former schools should they have questions about the information submitted on my behalf.

Some universities require a College Report, also called a Transfer Report or College Official Report. At Foothill, Common App College Reports are processed through Admissions & Records. Processing may take 5–7 business days, so students should plan ahead.

Students should be ready to provide:

  • Name and date of birth

  • Foothill student ID

  • Email address

  • Common App ID, if required

  • University names and contact emails

  • Completed and planned units

  • Any school-specific form, if needed

Before applying, students should ask each university about transfer admission, major requirements, costs, scholarships, housing, and support services. Foothill provides a helpful list of questions students can bring to appointments with university representatives.

Meet with a counselor if you need help choosing schools, understanding application requirements, or preparing transfer materials.
