Study in Spain

Below is the planned itinerary. Please note that this may be subject to minor changes:

• June 28–July 5: Madrid

• July 5–July 9: Cartagena (Murcia)/Mediterranean Coast 
• July 9–July 12: Valencia  
• July 12–July 18: Aínsa/Pyrenees
• July 18: Day trip to Zaragoza
• July 18–20: Madrid

Kathryn Maurer, Ph.D. (Anthropology & Global Studies).

Kathryn Maurer is a professor of anthropology and global studies and also serves as the faculty coordinator for all Foothill Global Experiential Learning programs. Originally from the Bay Area, Kathryn discovered her love of travel as an exchange student in Cuba and then in Italy as a teen. So enamored with the exploration of world cultures, she then decided to complete all four undergraduate years of college in Athens, Greece. She then completed graduate studies (M.A. and Ph.D.) in Folklore & Mythology (allied with Cultural Anthropology) at UCLA, based on ethnographic and archaeological research she conducted in Belize, Central America.

Since then, Kathryn has spent many years living, studying, and working abroad and has conducted fieldwork in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Ecuador, Italy, Greece, Spain, Ireland, and the Southwest and Bay Area of the United States. Before joining Foothill College, she lived in Greece and then Spain for 7 years, directing college semester abroad programs through SIT Study Abroad. Through Foothill College she has led study abroad and archaeological & ethnographic field schools in Belize, Ecuador, Ireland, and Cuba and then in 2025 launched the Spain program!

Foothill College is partnering with Odysgea (based in Huesca, Spain) in the program design, infrastructure, leadership, and support of this Summer 2027 Spain program. 

• ANTH 2B Patterns of Culture (4 credits)
• GLST 2 Global Issues (4 credits)

If you have already taken and passed one or both of those two courses, you will enroll in Independent Study and/or a "stacked" course offering. More information is available upon request.

Program Cost, Fees and Deadlines

Early Bird Program Fee: $4,500*
Standard Program Fee: $4,800*

Single-room supplement: $800*

*Please note that this program fee may increase or decrease slightly depending on the fluctuating exchange rate. The fee will be fixed and will not fluctuate as of January 31, 2027.

Application deposit (applied towards program fee): $100
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all spots are filled. Apply early to reserve your spot!

Early Bird Deadline: Apply by January 31 and pay the program fee of $4,500 in full by February 28, 2027.

Standard Program Fee Installment Plan:

• 1st installment of $1,000: by February 28, 2027.
• 2nd installment of $1,000: by April 1, 2027.
• Final installment of $2,700* + single supplement, if applicable: by May 15, 2027.

If applying after February 28, the application deposit and all prior installments are due at the time of acceptance.

Refund/Cancellation Policies

The application deposit is non-refundable (it reserves your spot on the program).

All remaining program fees are fully refundable if you withdraw from the program prior to February 28. After February 28, program fees are non-refundable. We highly encourage you to purchase an individualized “Cancel for any reason” travel insurance policy to protect your investment.

The following are included in program fees:

• Pre-departure and on-arrival orientations, including a comprehensive participant information packet with culturally relevant information for safe travel to, from, and within Spain
• Faculty-led lectures and seminars, field trips, and integrated experiential learning opportunities in places of great cultural and historical interest.
• Guest lectures and workshops with local experts.
• Service learning and volunteer opportunities.
• Guided activities including city and town tours in every location, museum visits, attendance at a flamenco show, and excursions to conservation sites, national parks, and heritage landscapes
• Accommodation in single or shared rooms with two to three meals per day (single room upgrade available at additional cost).
• In-person support upon arrival at Madrid airport within a prearranged arrival window.
• All in-country transportation as part of the program itinerary, including a Madrid metro pass.
• Medical and travel insurance and 24/7 emergency support.

The following are not included in program fees and will be additional costs:

• Airfare to Spain.
• Supplemental single room upgrade fee of $800.
• Foothill tuition and enrollment fees.
• Personal spending money for independent activities and travel.
• Anything else not listed above.

This program is open to adults of all ages and experiences who:

• Have earned a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• Are able to travel to Spain (hold or are able to obtain a U.S. passport or a passport from a country with eligible entry to Spain).
• Are ready for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure!
