The Destination
Travel to Honduras for a seven-day Global Medical Brigade focused on healthcare, community engagement, and global health. Students will work alongside Global Brigades staff, local healthcare professionals, community health workers, and fellow volunteers to learn how healthcare is delivered in rural communities with limited access to medical services.
Global Brigades works with partner communities in Honduras through a holistic model that connects healthcare with long-term community development. During the program, students may participate in patient intake and triage, shadowing healthcare professionals, pharmacy support, health education, and other community-based experiences appropriate to the brigade and local regulations.
The program is designed for students interested in healthcare, biology, public health, allied health, and related fields. Spanish is helpful but is not required because Global Brigades provides translators and in-country support. Students will also learn about Honduran culture and consider how social, cultural, and economic factors influence health and access to care.
The Academic/Cultural Focus
AHS 55 and the Honduras experience connect classroom learning with community-based global health practice. Students will examine disease prevention, health promotion, cultural influences on health and wellness, patient communication, health education, infection control, professionalism, and ethical community engagement. The program allows students to observe and participate in healthcare delivery in communities with limited access to care while learning alongside local professionals and Global Brigades staff.
The cultural component encourages students to understand health within the context of the community rather than viewing healthcare only through a U.S. clinical lens. Reflection on the clinical and cultural experience supports the learning goals of AHS 55 and helps students connect community health concepts with real-world practice.
