The course includes more in-depth content, as well as more demanding and creative assignments requiring the application of higher-level thinking, writing, and communication skills.

Department Note:

• Description: Fundamentals of black and white still photography. Introduction to the historical development of the medium and the role that photography has played in shaping social issues and its effect on culture. Practical investigation of photography's potential to contribute to personal visual expression. Exposure to multiple perspectives on photography as practiced and exploration of contributions by photographers from diverse cultures. Topics cover visual culture, photographic seeing, camera operation, use of aperture and shutter settings for aesthetic and exposure control, film processing, and printing.

• Description: Intermediate exploration of different film types, printing papers, and appropriate chemistry for desired outcomes; basic Zone System concepts, experimentation with push processing; use of medium format cameras; exploration of personal photographic style and expression. Includes a wide variety of genres, such as commercial photography, portraiture, social documentary, photojournalism, ethnographic and scientific photography, erotica, and fine-art photography. The student is required to contract with the instructor to determine the scope of assignment and the unit value assigned for successful completion.
