INTRODUCTION TO EARTH SCIENCE

- Description: An introduction to the essentials of Earth science, including the structure of the Earth and its internal processes, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and solar system. This course focuses on the interactions between physical and chemical systems of the Earth, such as the plate tectonics, the rock cycle, the hydrologic cycle, weather, and climate. Topics are aligned with the California State Science Standards for K-12 and will prepare pre-service teachers to teach these subjects.

GEOGRAPHY FIELD STUDIES: FOOD SYSTEMS

- Description: Investigate how regional soil types, vegetation patterns, and climate conditions intersect with cultural practices to shape food systems. Topics include agricultural land use, sustainability, and how food production both influences and responds to environmental and societal change. Field studies involve using the tools and perspective of geography to observe, measure, and evaluate the landscape. This includes the ability to describe and interpret spatial patterns, the ability to collect and analyze spatial and non-spatial data, and the ability to draw valid conclusions as to the processes responsible for those patterns. This course will have elements of both human and physical geography and a focus on human-environment relations.

Additional OFF-CAMPUS in-person class meetings will be on the following Saturdays: 4/24/27 from 8am - 1pm, 5/1/27 from 9am - 2pm, 5/8/27 from 8am - 3pm, and 5/15/27 from 8am - 1pm, in a variety of off-campus locations. Off-campus meetings will involve walking and standing for periods of time. Students will be responsible for arranging transportation. The instructor will communicate during the first class meeting about the off-campus meeting locations and help arrange carpooling. This course may include extra fees beyond textbook costs. |
