- Description: Provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as an emergency medical responder (EMR) to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical help takes over. The course meets or exceeds the 2009 Emergency Medical Services Educational Standards for Emergency Medical Response and meets Guidelines 2020 for First Aid and 2020 Consensus on Science for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN: BASIC PART A

- Description: Intended to instruct a student to the level of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of prehospital emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT. Students will participate in hands-on application of skills necessary to work as a competent EMT. Students will also perform patient assessment scenarios focused on medical and trauma complaints and treatments of various diseases and injuries, to build competence and prepare them to sit for the state certification exam. Includes all knowledge and skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with a fire department or other specialized service.

- Description: Second of two courses required to be eligible to take the California State written exam for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. Intended to instruct a student to the level of Emergency Medical Technician who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team, providing compassionate, impartial patient centered care. Students will participate in hands-on application of skills necessary to work as a competent EMT. Students will also perform patient assessment scenarios focused on medical and trauma complaints and treatments of various diseases and injuries, to build competence and prepare them to sit for the state certification exam. Includes all knowledge and skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care across the lifespan to a wide range of socioeconomic groups, at a basic life support level with a fire department or other specialized service.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN: REFRESHER
2.5 units
- Description: This course meets the education requirements as specified by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority, the Emergency Medical Authority of Santa Clara County and the National Registry of EMT (NREMT) of 40 hours. Intended for both pre-employed personnel and those persons currently employed by a fire department or ambulance service within the County of Santa Clara. Review and update the knowledge and skills required for basic certification. Students maintaining their National Registry of Emergency Technicians (NREMT) certification will meet the NREMT transition requirements with this course.

- Advisory: Advisory: Students must possess either a current EMT certificate or a certification which has been expired for no more than 24 months (must complete before the end of that month); students who have not fulfilled NREMT requirements within one year of EMT course completion may enroll; students must also possess current certification in American Red Cross CPR-BLS for the Professional Rescuer or American Heart Association CPR for the Healthcare Provider; students may repeat this course without petition when necessary to meet a legally mandated training requirement as a condition of volunteer or paid employment.
