ACADEMIC READING AND WRITING

- Description: In this course, students receive instruction in academic reading and writing, including writing processes, effective use of language, analytical thinking, and the foundations of academic research., , Techniques of writing will focus on expository and argumentative writing based on critical reading and thinking about texts. Reading will focus primarily on works of non-fiction prose, chosen to represent a broad spectrum of opinions and ideas, writing styles, and cultural experiences.
- Prerequisite: Placement as determined by the college's multiple measures assessment process.
- Corequisite:
- Advisory: Advisory: Demonstrated proficiency in English by placement via multiple measures OR through an equivalent placement process OR completion of ESLL 125 & ESLL 249; for students who do not meet the prerequisite requirement, concurrent enrollment in ESLL 201A or NCEN 401A is recommended, depending on placement by multiple measures; not open to students with credit in ENGL 1A, 1AH, 1T, or C1000H.

CRITICAL THINKING AND WRITING

- Description: In this course, students receive instruction in critical thinking for purposes of constructing, evaluating, and composing arguments in a variety of rhetorical forms, using primarily non-fiction texts, refining writing skills and research strategies developed in ENGL C1000 Academic Reading and Writing (or C-ID ENGL 100) or similar first-year college writing course.
- Prerequisite: College-level composition (ENGL C1000 / ENGL C1000H / ENGL C1000E / C-ID ENGL 100) or equivalent.

GOTHIC & HORROR LITERATURE

- Description: A survey of gothic and horror literature from its 18th-century beginnings to its 21st-century manifestations, including subgenres such as haunted spaces, poltergeists, and demonic possession; werewolves and vampires; supernatural, psychological, religious, and "slasher" horror. Reading and analysis of multicultural texts contextualized historically and interculturally, with special attention to the aesthetics and psychologies of fear.
