GE Requirements and What You Need for Transfer

When you plan to transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campus, you may need GE (General Education) certification from . Below are the certification options and how to request them.

Cal-GETC New GE pattern for CSU or UC transfer. Began Fall 2025.
IGETC CSU Alternative GE pattern for CSU transfer. Ended Summer 2025, but still valid under catalog rights.

GE pattern for UC transfer. Ended Summer 2025, but still valid under catalog rights.

CSU GE Breadth GE pattern for CSU transfer. Ended Summer 2025, but still valid under catalog rights.

Before You Submit a GE Certification Request

Please Note: It is strongly recommended that you meet with a Counselor to confirm you’ve met all requirements for full certification. Failure to meet these requirements will result in automatic denial.

  1. Log in to your MyPortal Account.
  2. Under “Students” select the “DegreeWorks” tile to open DegreeWorks
  3. Click the 'What-If' tab (second option to the right of 'Academic Audit').
  4. Update the search parameters:
    1. Catalog Year: Year to which you have catalog rights .
    2. Degree: Transfer General Education FH
    3. Level: Foothill Undergraduate
    4. Major: Select one of the following:
      1. Cal-GETC
      2. IGETC-UC FH
      3. IGETC-CSU FH
      4. CSU GE/Breadth FH 
  5. Click the blue 'Process' button to run the audit.
  6. Click the Printer icon (top right) and save as PDF. 

It is recommended to meet with a Counselor before submitting this form to ensure that you have met all requirements for a full certification.

Complete the GE Certification form. Please be sure to list the correct mailing address for the school that you wish for this to be sent to, and attached the Degree Works audit PDF.

For UC Only: High school LOTE requires two years of the same language with a C or better, and the Language Other Than English Request form must be submitted before certification. See the next section "Language Other than English (LOTE) UC Only.

  • Last community college attended prior to transferring must be Foothill College in order to request a certification
  • Only one (1) official GE certification will be processed per student.
  • Your request must be submitted prior to transfer.
  • All other college and/or university official transcripts must be on file with Admissions and Records, including your College Board AP Exam scores, if you are using AP credit.
  • All applicable coursework needs to be evaluated and showing on your DegreeWorks audit.

Partial Certification Requests

A partial certification may be available upon request. Review the criteria below to determine whether you qualify for a partial certification under a specific General Education (GE) pattern.

Important: Only one certification will be sent to the receiving institution. Once a partial certification is submitted, the receiving institution will determine how your remaining GE requirements must be completed. Before requesting a partial certification, it is strongly recommended that you consult with the receiving institution to confirm how you will complete any outstanding GE coursework.

GE Pattern Requirements for Partial Certification
IGETC Completing all but two (2) courses. Must also complete all of Area 1 and Area 2.
Cal-GETC (UC only) Completing all but two (2) courses. Must complete all of Area 1 and Area 2.
Note: Partial certification is not accepted by the CSU.
CSU GE Breadth Must complete the “Golden Four”: English Composition, Critical Thinking, Communication, and Mathematics (all of Area A and Area B4).
