Description: In this course, students learn and apply foundational rhetorical theories and techniques of public speaking in a multicultural democratic society. Students discover, develop, and critically analyze ideas in public discourse through research, reasoning, organization, composition, delivery to a live audience and evaluation of various types of speeches, including informative and persuasive speeches., , Introduction to the analysis, theory, and history of rhetoric and public address; application of principles of public address to the preparation and delivery of public speeches.

Advisory: Advisory: Demonstrated proficiency in English by placement via multiple measures OR through an equivalent placement process OR completion of ESLL 125 & ESLL 249; not open to students with credit in COMM 1A, 1AH, C1000H, or SPCH 1A.

Hours: 5 hours lecture per week. 60 hours total per quarter.
