PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF ANIMAL DISEASE

- Description: Pathophysiology of animal disease is presented, using an "organ systems" approach. Students learn mechanisms of response to disease of common domestic animals. Includes study of the common diseases of domestic animals with emphasis on the dog and cat. Emphasis is on learning how patients respond to disease and how the effective veterinary technician assesses and intervenes to benefit the patient. Topics include: etiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnostics, and nursing management of selected diseases. Principles of vaccination, disease prevention, public health, client education, and zoonosis. Students will build on their personal knowledge as well as information that they've learned in previous courses. CLINICAL PATHOLOGY METHODS

- Description: Fundamental studies of laboratory techniques and procedures involved in evaluating veterinary clinical samples. - Description: Study of the husbandry, management, and nursing care of rabbits and rodents kept as both research and companion animals. Orientation to the humane and ethical use of animals in research. Discussion of the veterinary technician as an animal advocate and nurse in biomedical research and the regulations affecting the use of animals in research. Students build on their knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as their restraint and nursing skills. Includes husbandry and housing, feeding and nutrition, and medical and surgical nursing techniques for the common species of laboratory animals, as well as an introduction to diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and the common diseases of laboratory animals, appropriate anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia methods. CLINICAL PRECEPTORSHIP I

- Description: First in the series of structured off-campus clinical experiences in licensed veterinary facilities, which serve to instruct students in practical, hands-on, clinical skills encompassing all aspects of veterinary assisting as specified by the Association of Veterinary Technician Educators. Students are under the direct supervision of one or more licensed veterinarians and/or credentialed veterinary technicians. Preceptorship sites are approved by the Veterinary Technology Program, in consultation with the student and the veterinary professionals. Students have opportunities for learning and practical application of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of a veterinary assistant, as well as exposure to various methodologies and practice philosophies in a variety of clinical settings. Emphasis is on the role of the veterinary assistant as member of the veterinary health care team.

- Description: Last in the series of clinical preceptorship courses providing practical clinical work experience in off-campus veterinary facilities supervised by licensed veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians. High-level practical application of previously acquired knowledge and skills. Includes the essential clinical skills and duties delegated to the veterinary technician, including client education, development of patient care plans, nursing care for critical care and emergency patients, advanced sampling techniques, complete dental prophylaxis, anesthetic procedures, and complex therapeutics.
