The Dental Hygiene Program prepares you to assess the medical/dental status of patients, develop a dental hygiene care plan, implement appropriate dental hygiene care, and evaluate outcomes.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene (BS-DH)

The Dental Hygiene Program at Foothill College now offers a Bachelor of Science degree and prepares you to take the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination and qualify for the state or regional Dental Hygiene licensure examination.

Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, our program has been training dental hygienists since 1964.

Foothill was given initial approval to participate in the pilot program for the baccalaureate degree by the 13-member California Community Colleges Board of Governors in consultation with representatives from the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems.

We expect to award our first bachelor of science degrees to the graduating class of 2018.


Two Tracks for the BS in Dental Hygiene

Entry-Level Track

  • This track is a 2+2 program with two years of prerequisite courses, including the required general education, science courses and social sciences courses.
  • Then following an application and acceptance to the dental hygiene program, there are two years of dental hygiene core courses and upper division general education.

Completion Track

  • This track for licensed dental hygienists; Tentative start date: 2018, pending program approval.
  • Completion of the pre-program courses and general education do not guarantee admission to the dental hygiene program.

Cost for Program

In addition to the per-unit and basic fees for lower-division courses, you will pay an additional $56 per unit for upper-division courses.

Upper-Division Courses

Throughout the upper-division portion of the program, you will learn clinical techniques and dental hygiene theory, using leading-edge technology and equipment in the on-campus Dental Hygiene Clinic.

  • The dental hygiene curriculum will prepare you to assess the medical and dental status of patients, develop and implement dental hygiene care plans, and evaluate patient outcomes.
  • You’ll also learn to design and conduct effective research methodologies, and present research findings in academic lectures and at professional  conferences.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will earn the Foothill College Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene and will be qualified to take the National Board Dental Hygiene and clinical licensing examinations in the U.S.
