Monday, April 24

The Holistic Black Student Experience: We Are Not a Monolith, Noon-1 p.m., ONLINE

This session will explore the various intersectional identities of our Black students in California Community Colleges. As historic investments and opportunities to engage a diverse group of specialized populations have increased, we understand that our Black students check off many of those boxes. From socioeconomically disadvantaged students, former foster youth, and justice-impacted students, the Black student experience is not monolithic.

Tuesday, April 25

Block to Boardroom, Corner to Corporate: Navigating Your JEDI Future w/ Que Philips Noon-1 p.m., ON CAMPUS— Appreciation Hall 1501

Meet Que PhillipsQuency Phillips is executive director of Joint Venture's Lighthouse initiative (formerly Building Back Better), established in 2021.  Phillips has a strong background in community service and entrepreneurship and has served on the Boards of a number of non-profit organizations, including SOMOS Mayfair, MACLA, the Women’s Foundation of California, and the Redwood City Police Activities League.

Supporting Black Student Success through Racially Equitable State Policy, Noon-1 p.m., ONLINE

This conversation will discuss immediate opportunities to support Black student success through state policy, explore policies passed in recent years and their impact on closing racial equity gaps, and bring in the practitioners, students, and community partners directly impacted by such policies.

Wednesday, April 26

Fresh Prince of Bel Air Porch Talk w/ Umoja, 11 a.m.-Noon, ON CAMPUS— Hearthside Lounge (2313)

We will be watching Fresh Prince (season 1 episode 23), an episode where Will takes Carlton to “the hood” and challenges him to survive. Carlton ultimately wins the bet, but at the expense of changing his entire identity to fit it. We plan on attacking the topics of code switching and double consciousness with the discussion panel.

Transition to Workforce and Livable Wages, Noon-1 p.m., ONLINE

Students say their top reason for going to college is to get a better job. Now more than ever, community colleges must support students with their educational journey and beyond. This session will focus on strategies to help Black students successfully transition into the workforce with livable wages.

Thursday, April 27

AI + The Future of Work w/ Workforce Development, BSS and SLI, 11 a.m–2 p.m., ON CAMPUS— Hearthside Lounge 2313

AI and The Future of Work, part of the 2023 Possible Self Event Series, is a workshop intended to help college students explore their possible career paths in a world where AI is fundamentally changing the way we work, and the jobs we can choose from. Students who attend the workshop will learn: 

  • Growing trends in the job market due to AI and other significant factors of change, such as Covid-19 and Chat GPT

  • Types of jobs that will go away and new jobs that may be coming

  • Skills, education and experiences that can help you to succeed in a business environment that is increasingly more ambiguous and uncertain

  • Whether you have no idea where to begin, or you have already made your future career choice, or you are somewhere in between, "AI and The Future of Work" can help you to better understand and prepare for your next step towards your future.

Programming for Black Student Success, Noon-1 p.m., ONLINE

Practitioners from across the state who have been successful in promoting Black student success will discuss their best practices and lessons learned during this panel. They will also share a practitioner's toolkit with attendees.

Equitable Outcomes in Healthcare w/Dr. Robert Ross, 5:30–7:30 p.m., ON CAMPUS— Appreciation Hall 1501

Join Dr. Robert Ross for a conversation about transforming the systems that perpetuate health inequities. Currently Dr. Ross serves as the 2023 Stanford Haas Center for Public Service Distinguished Visitor.

The lecture is free, but space is limited.

Friday, April 28

The Diaspora Dialogues: Educators' Reflections from Ghana, Noon-1 p.m., ONLINE

This session will explore the reflections from our faculty members who attended the historic all-African Diasporic Summit with A2MEND. This reflection is an opportunity for faculty to express their respective experiences from a personal and professional perspective. Faculty will share their introspective reflections, as well as how they have adapted their experiences into their curriculum and pedagogy as practitioners.
