Foothill 2030 Update
November 8, 2023
(1) Foothill 2030 Update.
A Foothill 2030 Steering Committee (aka the Education Master Plan) has been formed, and the Core Team leaders selected. Leading the Steering Committee are Elaine Kuo, Ajani Byrd, Voltaire Villanueva, and soon-to-be-announced student liaison. These core team leaders are convening a group of appointed constituents to structure work and campus-wide discussions on a revised Vision Statement. This work kicks off on November 13th at 1 p.m. A website is being crafted to house all information related to our educational master planning process. The visioning work will follow (and slightly overlap) with the review and approval of Foothill College’s new mission statement. Until the website launches, this presentation from the November 6th MIPC meeting provides an overview.
(2) STEM News.
Gratitude abounds for Zach Cembellin. After a short stint back in the mathematics
classroom, he has agreed to a repeat performance as dean of the STEM Division. Zach’s
interim appointment will begin December 1st and run until the conclusion of full recruitment
for a permanent position. The recruitment, led by VPI Stacy Gleixner, will begin in
the winter quarter and conclude before the summer quarter begins.
The Women in STEM Student Club is hosting a clothing drive November 13-16 from 11 a.m. — 2 p.m. in the library quad to raise funds for the Asian Women’s Shelter. Bring gently used
clothes and shoes for all ages and genders. See attached flyer.
(3) Housing in the News.
Some local press has proclaimed that Foothill College is a likely site for housing. This headline followed the nomination of Foothill College as a priority site for housing at a Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Association of Bay Area Governments joint meeting. In previous 12345’s , I’ve made known my support for any and all explorations of affordable housing for our students and staff at or near Foothill or De Anza. Under the direction of then Chancellor Judy Miner, Foothill College, and the nearby St. Nicholas school were included in LAH’s approved housing element plans. The nomination as a priority site is a continuation of that planning that may or may not result in housing solutions at Foothill College. If selected, it does make additional funds potentially available. Stay tuned!
(4) Owl Football.
Be sure to support the undefeated team as they clash with Yuba College this Saturday, November 11th, at 1 p.m. on our home field. This will be the third game I’ve attended. If you have never been, the stands have a family-friendly and fun atmosphere, food trucks are on hand, and the outcome elevates spirits. As I reported at Monday’s Board meeting, the Owl’s are averaging 44 points per game, with opponents averaging 7!
(5) Veterans Day.
The campus will be closed on Friday in observance of Veteran’s Day. In advance of that holiday, I will be at Veterans Plaza at 11 a.m. today for the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) Open House and on November 9th at Los Altos Rotary with Chancellor Lambert and his wife Mia (both Army Veterans) to pay homage to service and honor the dedication of Foothill College VRC students and staff.
Yours in service,
Kristina
