ACTG 1A :: FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING I 5 Units
Study of accounting as an information system, examining why it is important and how it is used by investors, creditors, and others to make decisions. The course covers the accounting information system, including recording and reporting of business transactions with a focus on the accounting cycle, ethics in accounting, the application of generally accepted accounting principles, international financial reporting standards, the financial statements, and financial statement analysis. Includes issues relating to asset, liability, and equity valuation, revenue and expense recognition, cash flow, internal controls, and ethics. Financial Accounting is covered over a 2-course sequence: ACTG 1A or ACTG 1AH and ACTG 1B or ACTG 1BH.
Advisory: Elementary Algebra or equivalent; demonstrated proficiency in English by placement via multiple measures OR through an equivalent placement process OR completion of ESLL 125 & ESLL 249; not open to students with credit in ACTG 1AH.

ART 2BH :: HONORS HISTORY OF WESTERN ART FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE RENAISSANCE 4.5 Units
History of Western art from ca. 600 through ca. 1600. This course examines the Middle Ages and the Renaissance using images, objects, and architecture to develop a comprehensive understanding of the social, political, and religious forces that shaped this period. Illustrated lectures and readings. The honors sections expand the primary sources for the student. In addition to the textbook, students have a reading list of sources (on reserve in the library). Lectures are more interactive and the student is expected to participate in group discussions. Non-technical introduction to astronomy, focusing on the search for life in the universe. The course starts with examination of the planets, moons, and other small bodies which make up our solar system, and continues to the scientific search for life elsewhere in the universe, including the thousands of planets we have found orbiting other stars. A hands-on approach to the scientific method, using astronomical data and equipment. This course is intended for students interested in equity, diversity, and inclusion in the sciences. Students will explore research on inclusion and diversity in STEM and health science, as well as research on interventions to enhance inclusion and diversity in those fields in higher education contexts. Students will reflect on how their own identities have impacted their experiences in science and develop strategies to promote equity in their future STEM or health science careers. Designed to help students understand the impact of financial decisions on their personal, professional, and community lives. More specifically, the course will discuss personal finance and quantitative reasoning concepts, frameworks, and techniques to plan, implement, and evaluate financial strategies and tactics. Topics will also include the time value of money, major consumer purchases (e.g., home, car, student loans, credit cards), retirement planning, investment options and their interrelationship with psychological, sociological, and economic factors. In addition, students will explore how financial technology (FinTech) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (e.g., financial planning, credit and management tools, fraud detection, I-powered budgeting tools, investment advisors, and fraud detection systems in personal finance) can be leveraged to enhance financial planning, optimize investments, and improve financial decision-making. Topics include key data science concepts such as correlation vs. causation, randomness, sampling, uncertainty, predictive models, and classification. Using a tool such as Jupyter notebooks, students write code for transformation and use of data tables, simulation models, and A/B testing.
