ACTG 1A :: FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING I 5 Units
Study of accounting as an information system, examining why it is important and how it is used by investors, creditors, and others to make decisions. The course covers the accounting information system, including recording and reporting of business transactions with a focus on the accounting cycle, ethics in accounting, the application of generally accepted accounting principles, international financial reporting standards, the financial statements, and financial statement analysis. Includes issues relating to asset, liability, and equity valuation, revenue and expense recognition, cash flow, internal controls, and ethics. Financial Accounting is covered over a 2-course sequence: ACTG 1A or ACTG 1AH and ACTG 1B or ACTG 1BH.
Advisory: Elementary Algebra or equivalent; demonstrated proficiency in English by placement via multiple measures OR through an equivalent placement process OR completion of ESLL 125 & ESLL 249; not open to students with credit in ACTG 1AH.

ART 2AH :: HONORS HISTORY OF ART: HISTORY OF WESTERN ART FROM PREHISTORY THROUGH EARLY CHRISTIANITY 4.5 Units
History of Western art from Prehistory through Early Christianity. An introductory survey examining images, objects, and architecture produced from the Paleolithic era to the end of the Roman Empire. We will discuss Prehistoric, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Early Christian and Early Byzantine culture. Illustrated lectures and readings. The honors sections expand the primary sources for the student. In addition to the textbook, students have a reading list of sources (on reserve in the library). Lectures are more interactive and the student is expected to participate in group discussions. Exams are more exacting with an emphasis on the student being able to comfortably assimilate political, social, and economic factors into their analysis.

Non-technical introduction to astronomy, with emphasis on stars, galaxies, and the origin and evolution of the universe. A hands-on approach to the scientific method, using astronomical data and equipment. Divided into small lab groups, students will do experiments and observing projects about a range of astronomical topics, including the motions and geometry of the solar system, patterns in the behavior of the sun, and skeptical examination of astronomy-related misinformation. Students will use data from modern telescopes to measure and make inferences about the properties of astronomical objects, and write about their findings in ways suitable for communication with the general public.

This course is intended for students interested in equity, diversity, and inclusion in the sciences. Students will explore research on inclusion and diversity in STEM and health science, as well as research on interventions to enhance inclusion and diversity in those fields in higher education contexts. Students will reflect on how their own identities have impacted their experiences in science and develop strategies to promote equity in their future STEM or health science careers. Through service learning, students will co-author culturally relevant curricular materials that will expand faculty capacity to connect students' personal lives to course content. Materials developed by students will be used and assessed in STEM and/or health science courses at Foothill College, local middle schools, and/or local high schools, and will be made available for a nationwide audience of teachers and professors.

Designed to help students understand the impact of financial decisions on their personal, professional, and community lives. More specifically, the course will discuss personal finance and quantitative reasoning concepts, frameworks, and techniques to plan, implement, and evaluate financial strategies and tactics. Topics will also include the time value of money, major consumer purchases (e.g., home, car, student loans, credit cards), retirement planning, investment options and their interrelationship with psychological, sociological, and economic factors. In addition, students will explore how financial technology (FinTech) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (e.g., financial planning, credit and management tools, fraud detection, I-powered budgeting tools, investment advisors, and fraud detection systems in personal finance) can be leveraged to enhance financial planning, optimize investments, and improve financial decision-making. The course culminates with the development of a comprehensive personal financial plan and simulate investment, retirement, tax, insurance, credit, and other financial decisions. The long-term objective is for students to develop a critically-reflective and adaptive capacity for life-long financial decision-making.

A survey of machine learning algorithms and modern packages. Includes models in supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. Explores the entire machine learning pipeline from dataset selection through model evaluation. Students will gain practical experience coding models, with less emphasis on math and theory.

C S 12B :: DEEP LEARNING 4.5 Units
This course offers an introduction to deep learning theories, principles, and practices. Students will explore neural networks, including perceptrons, gradient descent, and multilayer perceptrons, as well as advanced topics like convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), generative adversarial networks (GANs), variational autoencoders (VAEs), and attention mechanisms. By the end of the course, students will be proficient in implementing and training neural networks using frameworks like TensorFlow, Keras, scikit-learn, and PyTorch, and will be able to critically evaluate and improve deep learning models.

C S 31A :: INTRODUCTION TO DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS 4.5 Units
Introduction to database design and use of database management systems for applications. Topics include database architecture, comparison to file-based systems, historical data models, conceptual model; integrity constraints and triggers; functional dependencies and normal forms; relational model, algebra, database processing and Structured Query Language (SQL), database access from Applications-Embedded SQL, JDBC, Cursors, Dynamic SQL, Stored Procedures. Emerging trends will be studied, such as NoSQL databases, internet and databases, and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP). A team project that builds a database application for a real-world scenario is an important element of the course.
