Winter 2021 Book Club
Read "How to be an Antiracist"
by Ibram X. Kendi
The Foothill College Office of Instruction invites staff, faculty, student leadership and administrators to participate in a Winter Quarter 2021 book club for Ibram Kendi's national bestseller "How to Be An Anti-Racist," led by Interim Associate Vice President of Instruction Kurt Hueg.
To contribute to the college's ongoing work to advance our facility and comfort level with conversations about race, this book club will study Kendi's "groundbreaking approach to understanding and uprooting and racism and inequality in our society--and in ourselves." (Time Magazine)
The book club will be guided by Kendi's own suggested questions for group discussions, and we will create space for courageous conversations, open dialogue, and multiple perspectives.
The discussion group is an opportunity for members of the college community to improve their comfort level in discussing issues of race and is welcome to those who have already read the book and would like to share in the discussions.
In tandem, we'll review Kendi's "Antiracist Baby" book, which helps children (and parents) learn the language for critical conversations about race at an early age.
February 11, Thursday, 4 p.m. Please be ready to discuss Chapter 6, "Body," Chapter 7, "Culture," Chapter 8, "Behavior,"and Chapter 9, "Color."
February 18, Thursday, 4 p.m. Special Antiracist Baby Book Club Meeting. Please join if you have read Kendi's Antiracist Baby picture book. We will have a special meeting to discuss themes and lessons from Antiracist Baby, and discuss parenting in a racist society.
February 25, Thursday, 4 p.m. Please be ready to discuss Chapter 10, "White," Chapter 11, "Black," and Chapter 12, "Class."
