Sam White
Name: Sam White
Hometown: Oakland, CA
Position at Foothill: Associate Professor of English
How many years: Four
Why I chose Foothill: I was (and still am) impressed with Foothill’s commitment to providing a top-notch
education to ALL of its students. Also, the picturesque park-like campus is nothing
less than stunning.
Favorite part of my job: The continuous learning that occurs; my students’ as well as my own. Also, I love
forming lasting friendships with my students, and learning about their successes after
they leave my class.
Favorite book: To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
What I love most about Foothill: The many student-centered resources designed to promote success; in particular, I
am extremely happy to be part of the Umoja Community at Foothill. This is a much needed
resource in the campaign to improve success rates for Foothill’s
African American student population, and I am thrilled to be co-coordinator of this
learning community.
A fun personal fact about me and/or my hobbies: Many years ago, I spent two weeks on a friend’s sheep farm in New Zealand, helping
to process wool to be used in the manufacture of clothing, etc. This was grueling
work, which helped me to appreciate the value — and reward —
of hard work.
Have you taken a class at Foothill and which one(s)? I once took a ballroom dance class at Foothill; I am a huge waltz fan, and took the
class to brush up on this classic and timeless dance.
I am the first to attend college in my family? Fortunately, I am not.
My Major, Degree, Alma Mater and Year: I received my Masters’ in English (creative writing) from Notre Dame de Namur University
(NDNU) in 2007.
What do you want to be when you grow up? A humanitarian, and an advocate for social justice.
