Canvas Training

Faculty and staff are invited to register for one of the upcoming Canvas Certification training sessions designed to help you master and demonstrate the basic skills needed to use the Canvas course management system. Upon successful completion of the Canvas Certification course, you will receive "Canvas Certification" and thus become eligible to request Canvas sites for your own courses or groups.

Faculty must have "Canvas Certification" in order to use Canvas for scheduled classes at Foothill College. In order to receive "Canvas Certification" from Foothill College, you need to do at least ONE of the following:

  • Complete "Canvas Certification" online training provided by Foothill College
  • Complete "Canvas Certification" in-person training and the online Canvas Certification course provided  by Foothill College
  • Document your prior experience with Canvas (e.g., formal Canvas training from @ONE; teaching with Canvas)

Training is done in the Canvas Certification course which is an online, Canvas course. On-campus sessions are meant to supplement the online training. They do NOT replace the online training.

To become certified you must:

  1. Register, after which you will
    • be added to Canvas Certification course in the role of a student and
    • receive a practice Canvas site as an instructor
  2. Complete the Canvas Certification course
    • complete all quizzes and
    • meet all the requirements for the practice site

Topics include:

  • Introduction to Canvas
  • Organizing your course
  • Communicating with students
  • Assessing student work
  • Managing the Gradebook

Online Training

Training is self-paced so you can start and finish whenever you are ready. It will take most people about 4 - 6 hours to complete. You will not need to log into the course site on a daily or weekly basis. When you sign up you will be enrolled in the online course and given a Canvas practice site.

On-campus Supplemental Workshops

The hands-on workshop is designed to be a supplement to the Canvas Certification online course. When you enroll in the workshop you will be:
  • enrolled in the online Canvas Certification course and
  • given a Canvas practice site
In the workshop you will:
  • take a tour of Canvas
  • learn how to navigate the online, Canvas Certification course
  • do several assignments in your practice site
If you sign up for a workshop, you do NOT need to also enroll in the online only course since you will automatically be added to it. To become certified you MUST complete the online course!
