Faculty & Staff

Instructional and Student Services Continuity Plan

Maintaining course delivery and support services is fundamental to Foothill College’s ability to fulfill its mission.

Technological advancements provide an ability to maintain academic continuity during unforeseen closures by offering flexibility of instructional delivery via a range of options.

Instructional continuity refers to Foothill faculty, college and staff efforts to continuing course delivery during responses to normal academic operations due to weather, fire, illness, or other factors.

Even if you teach your courses on campus, face to face, it is important to be prepared for unforeseen scenarios that result in a campus closure.

Levels of Response

Foothill faculty should be prepared for four levels of response in the event of response: low, moderate, high and critical levels of response.

Low Level

Description

Would affect only specific students and instructors who are ill. The institution would continue with normal operations. Would impact only a few students or instructors and most adjustments could be made using existing processes.

Example

Course assignments could be revised, due dates could be extended, and extra class sessions could be scheduled. Individual course completion requirements could be determined, and exams could be proctored by substitute instructors.

Examples of low-level response include:

  • power outages
  • instructor illness
  • technology outages
  • temporary building closures.

Moderate Level

Description

Campus is open but classes are moved to virtual (online, email, Zoom, etc.) as much as possible.

Courses that must meet in person because virtual instruction is not appropriate will continue to meet in person.

Employees are expected to report to work at Foothill, with some allowance for employees to work virtually as determined by managers.

There is no known contracted case of COVID-19. This would allow a further degree of social distancing.

Example

May occur if Foothill keeps the campus open, services available for students who need to come on campus and holds some F2F classes, for several days or two-weeks

High Level

Description

Campus moves everyone, except for essential staff to a virtual campus (most staff working from home).  This may occur to maximize social distancing as a voluntary college effort or required by state and federal; or by public health officials, if campus needs to close to clean for 14 days due to 1 test positive Coronavirus case and thereby everyone needing 14-day quarantine.

Example

Foothill closes the campus for several days, two weeks, or until directed by state and federal.  In this case, only essential staff are expected to report to work at Foothill.  Only essential lab classes will be held.  All other staff will report to work remotely.

Critical Level

Description

All virtual (no exception) due to public health down.  A high-level response would occur if Foothill was closed for more than two weeks. There is one or more known cases of COVID-19. College is ordered to close by Public Health.

Example

To be prepared for Foothill to close for a week or more or during a final exam week, quick preparations must be made by both the college and the faculty.

The college needs to provide appropriate technology tools and training, especially for instructors who do not usually rely on canvas or other computer-based teaching tools.

The Office of Online Learning will provide support and will have increased staffing during high-level response.

Faculty would need to draw from online course instructional strategies in the event of moderate or high response. These strategies may include

  • virtual advising, office hours, and counseling
  • live or recorded lectures
  • electronic submission of assignments.

Office staff who do not have the tools to telecommute may be asked to take time off and will not be required to work.
