What We Believe
Meaning in Our Name
It was important for our team to choose a name for this support program that inspired and expected excellence from the students with whom we work.
We strongly believe in the adage —
“It’s not how you start, but how you finish."
We know that anyone with enough desire and resilience to go after their educational goals also has the core ingredients necessary to be considered a serious scholar.
We strive to honor that potential in every interaction we have with our students.
Across many cultures, the owl has symbolized guidance, protection, and a “seer of souls.” The Owl Scholars team works hard to provide assistance that mirror those characteristics.
Our deep knowledge about college success, especially at Foothill, will help those students who take full advantage to navigate their basic skills pathway and continue moving forward in their educational plan.
The Owl Scholars program is dedicated to early identification of students who may be struggling academically or personally, by establishing an early referral process initiated by faculty and staff.
This program is designed to facilitate the use of campus resources and improve academic success and persistence towards course completion.
In pursuing our mission, and the mission of our institution as a whole, we are guided by a shared collection of values. Specifically, we value:
Communication: Engaging in collaborative planning and thoughtful reflection, with a spirit of inclusiveness from diverse programs across campus.
Equity: Ensuring access to campus-wide resources, particularly: students of color, low-income students, and other historically underrepresented student populations
Respect: Embracing the diversity of each individual, student autonomy, and a sense of community.
Service: Employing a holistic approach towards student success, while being intentional in our retention efforts.
