Let’s celebrate the start of Latinx Heritage Month (LHM) with Foothill College President Thuy, Chancellor Judy Miner, LHM Chairs Jasslie Altamirano & Josh Contreras, DJ & engaging equity keynote motivational speaker Shay Franco-Clausen, and Foothill Alum Adiel Velasquez! We are kicking off this month with incredible speakers, music, and Foothill community.

Guatemala Teacher Corps Info Session

Through its partnership with Bay Area nonprofit Dream Volunteers, Foothill College will sponsor four (4) students to teach English to students at a K-12 school in the beautiful colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala during the 2022 winter (virtually) and spring quarters (travel restrictions permitting).

The basic costs of participation, including airfare, lodging, meals and in-country staff support, will be covered by a Foothill College Service Leadership Grant.

Join the Family Engagement Insitute (FEI) to learn about how to use your skills, knowledge and experience to generate income by starting your own business or working as an independent contractor, regardless of immigration status.
An immigration attorney will also be providing immigration legal screenings after the meeting for those interested.

Undocumented Student Action Week Systemwide Webinars
1-2 p.m.

During Undocumented Student Action Week, the Chancellor’s Office will be hosting a daily system webinar at 1:00 p.m. from October 19-22 on critical policy frameworks and tools designed to support institutions with successful implementation of recent undocumented student policy reforms. These webinars will include topics such as a review of statewide policies, data collection and use, and innovative use of funds.

Dr. Stephany Cuevas, “Apoyo Sacrificial, Sacrificial Support: How Undocumented Latinx Parents Get Their Children to College” 
12-1 p.m.

Apoyo Sacrificial explores the experiences of undocumented Latinx parents as they support and guide their children's pathways to higher education, and how their precarious immigration status impacts this support. In addition to analyzing the various understandings, interactions, and relationships undocumented Latinx parents develop with different education entities, including secondary schools and colleges and universities, the book also examines these in relation to the various social, political, and economic factors that shape parents' engagement with their children's education. Cuevas illuminates how the parents in her study engaged in supportive behaviors similar to those of middle- and upper-class families despite the barriers they faced, such as low-income households, undocumented legal status, and single parenting.

Stephany Cuevas is an assistant professor of education in the Attallah College of Educational Studies at Chapman University, where she teaches in the Integrated Educational Studies (IES) program. Dr. Cuevas served as a college advisor in Oakland Unified School District and as the lead seminar instructor for the UC Berkeley Summer Bridge Program.

To write words on a page and turn them into poems and stories requires courage. Mustering this courage, when our lives are burdened with grief, fear, and various levels of precariousness, is very difficult to do. Yet, we must insist on ourselves, cultivate our laughter and our imaginations. It is the very act of trying, of insisting, of persisting that saves us, will save us, and every day. This is what former Poet Laureate, Claudia Castro Luna, accomplishes in her writing, insisting that we look inward to find el camino pa’ delante.
