Lecture Series I: Islamophobia in Europe and banning the Hijab
2:30 p.m.
Featuring American author and activist Samina Ali. Ali serves as the curator of Muslima: Muslim Women’s Art and Voices, a global, virtual exhibition for the International Museum of Women, now part of Global Fund for Women. She is the co-founder of American Muslim feminist organization Daughters of Hajar and has been a frequent advocate for Muslim women’s rights. Join her talk on Islamophobia in Europe and the policies regarding Hijab.

Immigration, Lawyering and Islam

Roxana Moussavian is an immigration attorney and Co-Director of Pangea Legal Services, a non-profit based in San Francisco that defends immigrants against government deportation. At Pangea, Roxana works mostly with and for immigrants with disabilities. She holds a J.D. from Yale Law School. Prior to law school, Roxana worked as a Policy Advisor for the Obama Administration’s National Economic Council where her portfolio included community college policies. She is a Muslim and the daughter of Iranian immigrants to the United States.

Most Senegalese belong to one of four Sufi Muslim brotherhoods, a mystical sect of Islam. Join FC Photography Professor Ron Herman for a look at the Muridyya, Senegal’s most influential brotherhood, which blends African customs with traditional Islamic practices. Their doctrine consists of pacifism, prayer and work.
