Leanna graduated in 2016 from UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies. Before joining us, Leanna worked as a Program Coordinator that provided services and technology to prevent blindness. In 2017-18, Leanna spent a year as a MASA Teaching Fellow by helping to tutor Israeli children in English. Leanna will be responsible for student empowerment, engagement, and program planning.

David Kerrey will be playing guitar and offering us a Jewish blessing with his voice. He was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved to San Jose, California when he was only four years old. At that time, he joined his family at Congregation Shir Haddash (new song) in Los Gatos where he attended Sunday school and Hebrew school, had his bar-mitzvah, and joined the Shir Haddash band for special Shabbat services. David’s great grandparents came to New York from Latvia in the early 1900’s and he is happy to be sharing his Jewish heritage with you all. Also, he is the drummer in the Bay Area premiere Native American band Medicine Road.

Yarin is the current Israel Fellow at Hillel of Silicon Valley. Yarin graduated from Tel Aviv University with a bachelor's degree in Education and Jewish History. He recently worked as a museum guide at Beit Hatefutsot (Museum of the Diaspora) where he led workshops about synagogues, Jewish heroes, Jewish humor, and more to Israeli students, soldiers, and elderly at the museum. He has experience working with American youth, first as a counselor at a Jewish Reconstructionist Federation (JRF) camp in Pennsylvania and later as an Israeli guide for a USY Summer Israel Pilgrimage group.

Eden Ferede grew up in Ashkelon, a small city in the south of Israel where she is the fourth of six siblings. She attended Sapir College, graduating with a degree in Communications in 2016. For the past three years she has been working in the social sector, working with others to bring about social change in Israel.

She most recently worked at Beta Israel Village, an Ethiopian educational village in Kiryat Gat, which provides programs to adults from the Ethiopian community and gives the Israeli society a different perspective on the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel.

Based on the Philip Roth novel of the same name, this HBO series imagines an alternate American history during World War II, told through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in New Jersey as they endure the political rise of Charles Lindbergh, an aviator-hero and xenophobic populist, who captures the presidency and turns the nation toward fascism. Ann Ravel, Director of MapLight’s Digital Deception project, leads the development and promotion of policies that tackle online disinformation in politics. She is a lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law. She was appointed to the Federal Election Commission by President Obama, serving from 2013 to 2017, holding the roles of vice chair and chair.

Ann previously chaired the California Fair Political Practices Commission, appointed ny Governor Jerry Brown, was a Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the United States Department of Justice, appointed by AG Eric Holder, and served as Santa Clara County Counsel for over a decade, where she started the first in the country Social Justice affirmative litigation program in a public law office. In 2014, she was named a California Attorney of the Year by California Lawyer magazine, and in 2007, the State Bar of California named her Public Attorney of the Year. Ann received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Maiyan is a junior the University of California Santa Barbara, majoring in communications and minoring in technological management. Maiyan made Dean's List every quarter at Foothill and has excelled in her extracurriculars. When she first came to Foothill, she had a hard time figuring out what she wanted to study. She was originally an econ. major but after a few quarters she saw her passion and excitement for Communication. “I was originally scared to change my major because I wanted a sense of security for my future, However, with the help of my professors and academic counselors, I realized that my happiness is what is most important and that no matter what I study there will be jobs waiting when I graduate.”  Throughout her time at Foothill, she has had three different tech internships along with her classes and this really allowed her to find her passion in Marketing and HR.

When asked about her community college experience she reflects: “I am so proud of my accomplishments and just keep thinking how lucky I am that I had Foothill.” She served on student government as the ASFC Vice President of Activities, president of Students Supporting Israel Club (SSI), Inter Club Council (ICC) Rep. for SSI and was a Hillel of Silicon Valley intern. She hopes to inspire students to take advantage of all the opportunities at Foothill, and most importantly to be open-minded and study a major that truly makes you happy.

Gabriella Y. Karin was born in Bratislava, Slovakia. As a young girl, she experienced the horror of World War ll and the Holocaust. She spent three years hidden in a convent run by nuns.  It was a boarding school and she had false papers with a different name.  Her identity indicated that she was a Christian girl and she had to behave accordingly.

She had to leave the Convent. The last 9 months of the war she was hidden by a non-Jewish man, Karol Blanar, who risked his life by hiding 8 Jewish people.

After the war Gabriella finished her education as a fashion designer and moved to Israel where she lived for 11 years.  She moved to the United States in 1960.  During this time, she worked as a fashion designer and production patternmaker.  After concluding a career in the fashion industry, she became a sculpture maker, well known for her depiction of experiences during the Holocaust.  She is an accomplished maker of clay sculptures and a recipient of many awards for her work.

She has many sculptures on permanent display in museums in the United States and in museums in Slovakia.

Realism are the hallmarks of Gabriella’s sensitive sculptures.  As a result of the experiences of her childhood some of her work is Holocaust related, illustrating an emotional response to the horrors of the time by showing pain and suffering.  Rather than depicting a sense of anger, Gabriella’s work and her lectures exudes hope that her story can prevent persecution and cruelty in the world.
