Help us kick off February's National Black History Month by honoring the life, legacy and the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Join us for complimentary lunch, live musical entertainment, an “I Have A Dream” speech reenactment and our keynote speaker, the honorable Elihu M. Harris. Mr. Harris served as Mayor of Oakland for two terms. He was also a 12-year member of the California State Assembly, during which time he authored the historic 1981 legislation designating Dr. King's birthday a California state holiday. Mr. Harris received an MA in Public Policy from UC Berkeley and law degree from UC Davis. He also served as Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District from 2003 to 2010.

Lecture Series I: RACISM - The Elephant in the Room

Join educator, activist, and artist, Phavia Kujichagulia for an extraordinary lecture presentation on RACISM - The Elephant in the Room, as she reveals the historic socio-political origins and daily psycho-linguistic assaults of racism, while debunking the mythology of race. Phavia Kujichagulia is a former Professor of Ethnomusicology & African Civilizations at World College West and Stanford University’s Workshop on Political & Social Issues. In 2002, Sistah Kujichagulia was a member of the United States Delegation to the 2^ndWorld Conference Against Racism (WCAR - Culture & Spirituality Committee) in the Caribbean country of Barbados.

Last quarter, Foothill faculty, staff, administration, and students participated in the "Black Minds Matter" webinar series presented by Dr. Luke Wood of UC San Diego. Join Foothill faculty members Carolyn Holcroft and Sam White for a presentation on key take-aways from the series, including a look at how black masculinity and the criminalization of the black male can play an important role in the classroom.

Film Festival: I Am Not Your Negro

I Am Not Your Negro envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, a radical narration about race in America, using the writer’s original words, as read by actor Samuel L. Jackson. Alongside a flood of rich archival material, the film draws upon Baldwin’s notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America.

Lecture Series III: Umoja

Between 1502 and 1866, 11.2 million Africans disembarked from slave ships in the New World during the Middle Passage. Of those 11.2 million people, only 450,000 came to the United States. The rest of the enslaved Africans who survived the journey were taken to the Caribbean, Latin America and South America." Join us as we are led by College of San Mateo Ethnic Studies Professor and Chair, Dr. Frederick Gaines, through an exploration on the history of African and Latino Americans working and living side by side, and how we can continue that tradition at Foothill. The first portion will be the film screening, with a discussion to follow.

Join Foothill College Language Arts Instructor Scott Lankford and his students while they host a read-in focused on eco-justice themes in African American Literature. Along with this, Foothill College welcomes Avotcja & Modúpue. Avotcja is an award winning poet & multi-instrumentalist, and the Berkeley Poetry Festival has honored her with its Lifetime Achievement Award for the truly valuable creative and community work that she has accomplished.

The AAN functions in an advocacy and support role for Foothill-De Anza Community College District faculty, staff, administration, and students of African descent. All are welcome to attend this meeting.

MOLODI is a performance ensemble that takes body percussion to the extreme. MOLODI blends collegiate stepping, tap, gumboots, beatbox, poetry and hip hop dance with guerilla theatre and robust personalities that bring to life a high-energy, rhythmic experience.

Month Long Exhibit

A month long exhibit featuring a series of photographs of students, teachers, and parents in primary schools in Botswana and Lesotho that observed the simultaneous focus on modern education as well as the importance of the preservation of cultural tradition for students and families.
