MANAPUA Mentors

APPLY TO BE A MANAPUA MENTOR!

At MANAPUA our mentors are known as M&M’s (MANAPUA Mentors). They are carefully chosen to create a meaningful relationship that is aimed toward the growth of the mentees. We understand how crucial the relationship between a mentor and the mentee is, and our dedicated team does everything to ensure that the relationship between an M&M and mentee is as rewarding as possible.

Our M&M’s provide one-on-one mentoring to mentees. They provide them with positive behavioral concepts that empowers the mentee to recognize valuable insights and knowledge about themselves, their AANHPI cultural identities, college academics, how to address life challenges, both as an individual and as a group, as well as how to build and create community.

The purpose of MANAPUA is to ignite and foster the fire within and empower mentees with the skills and resources to grow and develop their complete holistic self.

Benefits of becoming a MANAPUA Mentor

When you become a mentor at MANAPUA, we ensure that we focus on your growth as well. While MANAPUA programs are for Foothill College students, they also have benefits for M&M’s.

M&M’s can learn as much as the mentees when they participate in a mentoring program.

  • Being an M&M helps you change life and that is an immense achievement. Mentoring is a very fulfilling experience for many individuals.

  • There is a great change in your perception of life when you become a mentor. You come face to face with many situations that require you to think differently.

  • Being a mentor also helps you gain a sense of purpose. Being responsible for someone else provides you with a strong purpose you can put your energy towards.

  • You can drastically improve your communication skills as being a mentor requires you to clearly communicate various things to your mentees.

  • Being an M&M with MANAPUA is also a great networking opportunity that provides you opportunities to interact with other mentors and learn from them.

Criteria of MANAPUA Mentors

We welcome all individuals who want to become M&M’s; however, there are certain eligibility criteria that are required.

  • Be a current Foothill College Faculty or Staff

  • Knowledge and Experience working with students who identify as AANHPI

  • Commit for at least a period of one year.

Expectations of MANAPUA Mentors

The M&M’s spend a few hours every month with the mentees and participate in various activities that are aimed towards developing leadership skills to help cultivate a holistic self, acquiring tactics and strategies to support academic success, building a community within Foothill College, and learning methodologies on how to navigate and better understand their cultural identity.

Mentoring is more than meeting with a mentee and checking in. Here are the expectations of an M&M:

  • Attend AMPD (AANHPI Mentoring Professional Development) series
  • Attend Mentor Support Meetings(MSM)
  • Meet with mentee at least twice a month, and at least 6 times per quarter
  • 4 out of the 6 mentorship meetings must be in-person
  • Stay connected and communicate with AANHPI Coordinators
  • Complete Mentor Closing Surveys
  • Make a one-year (or school year) commitment
  • Notify staff if they are having difficulty in their mentoring relationship
  • Notify the program coordinator of a significant change in their mentee
  • Share preferred contact information
