Study Painting

The Foothill College Art Program (Emphasis in Painting) is geared toward students with a variety of skill levels. In this emphasis, students take Oil Acrylic and Watercolor Painting I and II. to enhance their portfolios for transfer into art programs, build life painting skills, find their voice, and be part of a community of artists

Rooms 1601 & 1602 provide students enrolled in the painting emphasis access to the following facilities:

  • Standing easels and horse easels
  • Painting Boards
  • Drafting tables
  • Large art design tables
  • Standing lights
  • Still Life Prop room

Special Events and Workshops

In addition to the painting credit classes, there are community-based plein air painting workshops at Hidden Villa hosted by Foothill College Community Education and student painting exhibitions.

Degrees & Certificates

Earn an Associate in Arts (AA) in Art or a Certificate of Achievement (CA) in Art — with an emphasis in Painting.

Course Offerings


The painting credit courses provide a welcoming community within person- classes on weekdays, Saturdays, as well as hybrid and online options. Each course consists of 6 hours per week, with plenty of open lab time for assignments and technique refinement.

ART 19A Oil Painting I

Introduction to the theory and practice of basic oil painting, including the use of value, color, and light to model the three-dimensional form.

ART 19B Acrylic Painting I

Introduction to the theory and practice of basic acrylic painting, including the use of value, color, and light to model the three-dimensional form.

ART 19C Oil Painting II

The theory and practice of intermediate oil painting. Building on fundamental oil painting skills to develop personalized style, complex subject matter, color theory, and composition.

ART 19D Acrylic Painting II

Continuation of ART 19B. The theory and practice of acrylic painting. Building on fundamental acrylic painting skills to develop personalized style, complex subject matter, color theory, and composition.

ART 19G Outdoor Landscape Painting

This course introduces beginning artists to the core concepts and techniques of painting outdoor landscapes and nature subjects in the open air on location. Students will complete small-scale one-sitting landscape paintings from observation. Lectures will consist of the art of plein air, plein air societies and communities, and plein air painting demonstrations.

ART 47A Watercolor 

Study of beginning level transparent watercolor painting techniques. Emphasis on basic techniques of watercolor painting, composition and color theory.

ART 47B Watercolor II

Study of intermediate techniques using transparent and opaque watercolor painting. Emphasis on intermediate techniques of watercolor painting, composition, and personal subject matter.
