Study Digital and Illustration

The Foothill College Art Program with an emphasis in Digital & Illustration is geared toward students with a variety of skill levels. In this emphasis, students take digital painting, color theory, as well as illustration and digital classes to enhance their portfolios for transfer into art and illustration programs, build life digital, color and design skills, find their voice, and be part of a community of artists.

Color Theory

Drawing Facilities and Rooms

Rooms 1601, 1801, and the Idea Lab provide students enrolled in the digital and illustration emphasis access to the following facilities:

  • IDEA Computer Lab
  • Wacom Cintiq Pro 16 digital tablets
  • Drafting tables
  • Large art design tables
  • Light tables

Earn an Associate in Arts (AA) in Art or a Certificate of Achievement (CA) in Art — with an emphasis in digital and illustration.

Course Offerings

The digital and illustration credit courses provide a welcoming community with classes on weekdays, as well as hybrid and online options. Each course consists of 6 hours per week, with plenty of open lab time for assignments and technique refinement. EXPLORE course options here.

ART 15A Digital Painting 

Basic instruction using computers, digital tablets, and software to produce digital paintings and images for artistic expression, design, and illustration.

ART 15B Digital Painting II

Intermediate instruction using computers, digital tablets, and software to produce digital paintings and images for artistic expression, design, and illustration.

ART 15D Digital Illustration for Film & Animation

Prerequisite: ART 15A.
Advanced instruction using computers, digital tablets, and software to produce digital illustrations, sketches, images, and drawings for artistic expression and design focused for live-action film and feature film animation media. Emphasis on skills and concepts related to human anatomy, gesture drawing, character design, and basic illustration, visual development, and composition principles.

ART 20 Color Theory

A study of the principles, theories, and applications of additive and subtractive color in two dimensions. Topics will include major historical and contemporary color systems, production of projects in applied color, and the elements of design as they apply to color.

GID 31 Graphic Design Drawings

Developing drawing skills for communicating ideas. Learning to simplify complex realistic images to express design concepts rapidly and effectively.

GID 33 Graphic Design Studio 1

Introduction to graphic design and visual communication. Projects include composition, typography, image editing and logo design. Design principles are explored through creative projects. Students practice fundamental software skills using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to complete the graphic design activities in this course.

GID 41 Digital Art & Graphics

Introduction to using computers and software for painting, drawing, image processing, photo composites, typography and time-based works. Emphasis on image making and creative problem solving.

GID 43 Illustration & Digital Imaging

Creation of images to communicate ideas. Traditional and digital media. Emphasis on concept development and communication effectiveness. Development of personal visual vocabulary while learning art making techniques and media, reproduction processes and illustration business practice.
