Sholeh Asgary is an artist, educator and former arts administrator. Asgary received her BA with a focus on photography and painting from San Francisco State University in 2007 and her MFA in studio arts from Mills College in 2011. Asgary currently teaches courses in photography at both Foothill College and De Anza College, and previously at San Francisco State University. Her work has been shown in Montreal QC., New York, the David Brower Center in the Bay Area, and curated into shows by Jennifer Blessing, Lucinda Barnes, and Jasmine Moorhead, with performances at Stanford University and Mills College. As a director and curator, her initiatives have been awarded an Alternative Exposure Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation. As an Iranian refugee, her work addresses ways objects represent syntax and how disambiguation can actually break down language and history. Utilizing cross sections between photography, painting, light, projection and sound, Asgary creates sculpted environments that are lit much like objects to be photographed--leaving the mechanical trace of the camera to the viewer's stance.
