Humanities Mellon Scholars

Internships

The Humanities Mellon Scholars Internship Program provides a first-hand look at the possibilities open to graduates in Humanities-related majors.

These work-study programs provide a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day operations at a local museum, participation in a community art project, or assist in the implementation of Humanities-related events.

Another distinctive feature of the Humanities Mellon Scholar Program is that you can intern for up to four quarters!

My internships taught me to be a better writer and developed my critical thinking skills. Mellon Scholars can seem intimidating but it’s worth it to push yourself and get out of your comfort zone.

- Camille Henry

You'll explore career opportunities, network with professionals, and contribute to meaningful work in a professional environment — applying skills and practices developed in your coursework.

Internship placements may include museums, theaters, non-profit community organizations, educational projects or music and film production companies. You will gain insight into your internship organization while also benefiting from the experiences of other Humanities Mellon Scholars

What are the details of the HMS internship work?

The internship averages between 5 to 10 hours per week paid at $20 per hour.  Mellon Scholars are also required to enroll in an on-line internship course (the one-unit ITRN 50 during their first quarter interning, the two-unit ITRN 51 during their second quarter, the three-unit ITRN 52 class during their third quarter, and the four-unit ITRM 53 class during their fourth quarter).  Students are encouraged but not required to intern the full four quarters.   HMS Interns check in weekly via Canvas, to submit weekly timesheets and share updates on internship experiences.
