LGBTQ+HM Lecture: Lawyer Joseph Fruen
Part of LGBTQ Heritage Month
Join by Zoom
June 16, 2020
Join local attorney and community advocate, J.R. Fruen, for an examination of the legal impediments to the full inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in American society.
The conversation will begin with a general overview of these legal roadblocks, followed by a closer look at the path to legalized same-sex marriage in the United States, tracing its history from Baker v. Nelson to Obergefell v. Hodges. The discussion will then turn to more local matters, such as exclusionary zoning and city planning practices that disproportionately affect minority groups--especially the LGBTQ+ community--as well as California's efforts at a remedy. Finally, the dialogue will conclude with recent legal developments in equitable bathroom and locker room access for the transgender community.
J.R. is an attorney with his own practice in nearby Cupertino. He is a co-founder of the local advocacy organization, Cupertino for All, which seeks to make Cupertino and its neighboring communities more inclusive and equitable. He is a graduate summa cum laude of UCLA, and of Santa Clara University School of Law.
