Schedule: Wednesday, July 28, 2021

Time: 12-1:15PM

Access: Link Upon Registration

On July 16, 2021, the Texas federal court issued a ruling ordering USCIS to cease approving first-time applications to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA has provided security and stability to more than 825,000 individuals, more than a quarter of whom are residents of California and more than 200,000 of whom have served this country as essential workers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the years, DACA recipients and their families have been forced to navigate significant uncertainty in their lives as a result of politically motivated legal and policy challenges to the program.

The California Community College Chancellor’s Office, Foundation for California Community Colleges, California State University Chancellor’s Office, and the Immigrant Legal Resource (ILRC) will host a webinar. This webinar will include a legal analysis of the Texas decision; what it means for the future of DACA; the practical impacts of the decision on current DACA recipients, DACA-eligible students, and campuses; its implications for the ongoing negotiations in Congress regarding a roadmap to citizenship; the response of and next steps for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS); and the opportunities and urgency for advocacy by higher education leaders and communities
