Memorial Service Held for A memorial service was held for the late Dr. Kweko Asenso July 28, 2001 at Sweet Home Baptist Church in East Palo Alto. Dr. Asenso was an instructor at Foothill College, De Anza College and the College of San Mateo. He was described as, taking delight in motivating, and inspiring his students in the pursuit of their educational goals, more especially the underprivileged students in his classroom. As a beloved member of our adjunct faculty he contributed over 20 years of development to generations of students. One of his more significant contributions was to help organize Foothill De Anzas first study abroad to Ghana, Senegal and Nigeria. Dr. Asenso wrote and published Race and Ethnic Relations: A Comparative Perspective published by Columbia Pacific University Press 1990. Although Dr. Asenso is greatly missed, the seeds of knowledge he passed on to so many students continue to grow and blossom. French Professor Returns From Sabbatical Foothill French Instructor Mary Bell returned from her sabbatical leave. She traveled to France to conduct research for a new course on French literature that she is developing and will teach at Foothill College. Welcome back Professor Bell. Counselor Survives World Trade Attacks Foothill Counselor Davida Vance Lee looked forward to her New York City vacation in September but what started out as an early morning of touring became an unbelievable nightmare. Vance Lee, who was in the vicinity of the WTC Towers on Sept. 11 during the explosion had to run for her life. Vance Lee was able to safely escape and is back with us at Foothill College. Welcome home to Foothill, Davida. Your colleagues and friends are relieved and grateful that you returned to us unharmed. Melanie Pla-Richard Has New Granddaughter On Sept. 20th, District Opening Day, Pla-Richard became grandmother to a new baby girl. Azaiah Neiche was born at Travis Air Force Base weighing in at 6lbs. and 3ozs. Mother and baby are doing well. Grandma is still recovering from the rigor of the security she experienced trying to get onto the base. Military escort directly to the birthing room was a first, but she is grateful that the patients and staff are well protected. Witnessing the birth of a grandchild she says is truly a blessing. Africa By The Bay, Inc., Supports Foothill College Afrocentric Community Africa By the Bay Inc., exemplifies the very essence of umoja. Umoja is a Kwanzaa principal. One of the hallmarks of Harambees success is the integration of African textiles, clothing, masks and art that create the ambiance of an ancient African celebration. Without the support of Cheikh Diakhate, president of Africa By The Bay, Inc., our challenges in this regard would have been much more formidable. Africa By the Bay has annually provided a rich array of artifacts and kente cloth stools that contributes to the success of our annual program. The African American Network thanks Cheikh for this special support. We encourage our community to continue to patronize this valuable community asset. Africa By the Bay is located at 3303 Lakeshore Avenue, Oakland, and boasts of one of the finest selections of African clothes and artifacts in the Bay Area. The Foothill College
