Student Success Center

At Foothill’s Student Success Center you can apply for admission, register online for classes and receive guidance in the process. A friendly staff will also help direct you to campus services and activities available at Foothill. If you need help in a class, with financial aid or just have a basic admissions question, the Student Success staff is available to assist you.

Counseling Services and Educational Planning

Counselors are available to help students with academic, career and personal concerns. They are your best resource for help in selecting the appropriate classes that will meet your educational goals and objectives. Services include educational planning; exploring college majors; transcript evaluation; applications for certificates and degrees; transfer requirements; transfer admission agreements (TAA); petitions to academic council; and study skills courses. They are a valuable resource for referral to other campus programs and services.

Pass the Torch Program

Foothill’s innovative Pass the Torch Program unites two types of students: students who excel in English, math and science, and students who are struggling in these same core curriculum classes. Faculty and staff help the two students form a study team for one-on-one academic mentoring. The goal is to help at-risk students earn a grade of C or higher in a specific course so they can advance to the next level of instruction. Study teams are currently offered for the following subjects:
Biology 10 & 14
Chemistry All classes
English 100, 110, 1A and 1B
ESL 167, 25 and 26
Mathematics all classes

Scholarships

Generally, scholarships are based on academic standing, financial need, potential progress in major field of study, and college and community activities. The amounts and qualifications vary with each scholarship. More than $100,000 in scholarships are awarded annually. Scholarships are considered academic gifts and need not be repaid. Listings of current scholarships are posted in the Student Development Center Room 1900. Check periodically for scholarship information.

Writing Center

Writing Center tutors give students advice on writing assignments, job and college applications, and essay examinations. Students enrolled in composition classes (Engl. 110, 1A and 1B) are strongly encouraged to enroll in a writing lab. Students may use the center on a drop-in basis or, if enrolled in a composition class, may make appointments. Students who want help with writing tasks may stop in for help.

Math Center

The Foothill Math Center is an inviting and comfortable place for students to learn mathematics. Math Center staff include Foothill College math faculty and instructional associates. Students receive help with assigned homework or asking questions about unfamiliar math concepts.

Tutorial Center

The on-campus Tutorial Center provides individual tutoring. Faculty-recommended tutors with B grades or higher in the subjects they wish to tutor, are familiar with course objectives and materials. Visit the Tutorial Center for available hours and courses currently being tutored.
Services available include the writing center, drop-in tutoring, ESL Writing Center, Writing Across the Curriculum tutoring and EOPS tutoring.

Minority Transfer Program

The Minority Transfer Program provides services that assist students in developing strategies to complete their college goals for transferring, earning an Associate in Arts Degree or Associate in Science Degree, and achieving their individual goals while attending Foothill. All minority students are encouraged to participate in this program as soon as they enroll at Foothill. Services include individual assistance, admissions/financial aid workshops, peer and faculty mentoring, talent roster, early registration privileges, small group study sessions, and an annual recognition celebration. Students may join the program throughout the academic year. Special emphasis is given to under-represented students.

Health services, psychological counseling and legal services are among the many services that students find helpful. Many of the health services are provided free or on a sliding fee scale. Legal consultation and psychological counseling services are provided free of charge. Refer to your student handbook or call for more information about the nature and scope of the services provided. On Strategies for Academic Success: The Counseling Perspective

Enroll in the CNSL 50: Orientation to College course.
Make a commitment to meet with a Foothill Counselor at least once per quarter. Together you and your counselor will develop an Individual Education Plan based on the most current academic requirements. Foothill Counselors are professionals. Their job is to help you set and achieve your academic goals. And, although friends mean well, they are not aware of new requirements for transfer or changes in academic policies.
Develop an education plan with your counselor. With counseling assistance you will select the right classes to transfer or earn your degree. If you’ve attended other colleges or universities, bring your transcripts to the appointment with your counselor.
Visit the Career and Transfer Center in the Student Development Office. You’ll find helpful information and a friendly staff to assist you. Use Eureka, it is a fun and powerful tool. This software program is great to research occupations, universities that offer your major and much more.
Complete the math and English assessment. For assessment dates and times, call (650) 949-7230 or access www.foothillcollege.org.
Review the calendar of important dates in your schedule of classes. There are important deadlines for refunds, adding/dropping a course, petitioning and more.
If you must drop a class, complete a drop card and take it to the Admissions and Records Office. If you stop going to class without officially withdrawing you will get an F grade.
Buy your books early. You don’t have to wait until the first day of class. The Foothill bookstore has a list of required texts for all classes. You can also access the bookstore online at books.fhda.edu.
Review the final exam schedule that appears in your Schedule of Classes and be prepared.

Students will begin together in entry-level math and English and take the course as a group for one academic year. The English courses will focus on developing writing skills through the exploration of African American literature, culture and issues.
