Harambee TentAttention all Foothill students of African Ancestry who will be transferring, graduating or earning their associate degree: Harambee 2001 is your ceremony! The rites of passage celebration marks the achievements of students of African ancestry who will be graduating, transferring, or receiving a certificate. The ceremony, to be held in Room 1301 will begin promptly at 4 pm on Friday, June 29, with a light reception following. Plan to attend one of the brief rehearsals on either Thursday, June 28, at noon in Room 1301 or June 29th at 3 pm in Room 1301. There will be plenty of time for a meal/transition for those of you who are also planning to attend Foothill’s graduation in the stadium at 7:30 p.m.

All are welcome to witness the ceremony that will begin with a call of the drums to Room 1301. If you are eligible not just to attend, but to PARTICIPATE, please contact Nicole Gray at (650) 949-7175 and leave your name. The Harambee 2001 Planning Committee is hard at work to plan yet another inspired, Afrocentric graduation rites of passage. Don’t miss out! This will be an unforgettable, affirming experience.

Saree MadingThe Harambee speaker is Foothill graduate Saree Mading (formerly Saree Boult) at right. Saree recently moved back to East Palo Alto, where she is currently a full-time teacher. She is actively involved in her neighborhood and community as well as in efforts to help refugees of Southern Sudan, her husband’s home. Foothill warmly welcomes Saree back to campus to take center stage and inspire the Harambee Class of 2001.

African American Network Spring retreat

On Saturday, April 21, African American Network members attended their first spring retreat at the Wildwood Manor clubhouse in Sunnyvale. April Henderson, our gracious host, worked diligently with the planning committee to ensure a successful event. Dr. Octave V. Baker of Communications Training Consultants facilitated the retreat. Organizational goals were established to guide the future direction of our efforts as we advocate for the success of students of African ancestry.
