SLI Student Advisory Group

The SLI Student Advisory Group is a new formation of Foothill College student and alumni leaders interested in advising, supporting, and initiating change efforts at Foothill and in the local communities to increase participation, retention, and persistence in STEM disciplines and in the career pipeline of underrepresented groups in STEM.  

SLI is looking for students who have an interest in diversity in STEM. You don’t need to be a STEM major to be part of this group, but it helps if you have taken a STEM course at Foothill College (STEM = science, technology, engineering, and math). 

This is a service leadership opportunity and is unpaid. SLI is now recruiting members for the 2021-22 school year.

TCSI Peer Mentor

SLI is hiring 5 - 6 peer mentors to support the TechCore Summer Institute.

Peer mentors will
  • Get matched with 1 or 2 small groups to work through a curriculum that moves students from identifying a social issue they care about to creating a wireframe, developing a simple app, creating a simple website, and putting together a presentation to pitch to judges.
  • Meet with the TCSI staff team every afternoon to debrief and confirm plans or the next day.
  • Provide individual support to any students in their own team, including academic and socioemotional support.
  • Work with the TCSI staff team to plan and execute the plan for
    • Daily morning check ins
    • The final day of the program, including presentations and celebration
  • Any other tasks designated by the SLI Director

Term of employment - 7/26/21 - 9/7/21, average 15 hours a week at $17/ hour.

Tech Internships Peer Mentor

SLI is hiring 1 tech internship peer mentor to support the SLI STEM Summer Internship program.

The tech internship peer mentor will
  • Set a schedule with students who are participating in SLI STEM Summer internships (summer interns) with tech Companies to check in and see how they are doing.
  • Provide office hours and by-appointment hours to provide support to summer interns.
  • Share tips and strategies in the program training at the beginning of the summer.
  • Create resources available in SLI STEM Summer Internship Canvas shell for students to access to succeed in their internship. These resources could be aggregation of links of articles and videos, homegrown videos, etc.
  • Any other tasks designated by the SLI Director.

Term of employment - 6/1/21 (flexible) - 9/7/21, average 10 hours a week at $17/ hour.

Tech and Social Justice Facilitator

The TechCore Summer Institute (TCSI) Tech and Social Justice facilitator is a temporary role that will be supervised by the SLI director and will be mainly be responsible for using an existing project-based learning framework for a summer program to further develop and facilitate for a group of 30-40 incoming Foothill College students.

Responsibilities

  • Review the project-based learning framework provided by Curated Pathways for web development, app development, and using technology to address a social issue.
  • Develop lead in activities for each day’s project work session.
  • Set up instructions for students to work in small groups, to be guided by peer mentors.
  • Work with the peer mentors to prepare them for their group support.
  • Make connections between gaining technology skills and using them for social impact.
  • Set students up for success to be able to present to a panel of judges at the end of the four week program.
  • Other related tasks designated by the SLI Director

Term of employment: 6/7/21 - 9/7/21 (flexible start and end dates).

Summer Internship Program Assistant

The SLI STEM Summer Internships program assistant is a temporary role that will be supervised by the SLI director and will mainly be responsible for administrative support for the internship program, including checking in with the 40 or so internship students, monitoring timesheets, troubleshooting issues and challenges, and assisting with professional development cohort seminars.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor student timesheet entries to ensure students are tracking their time and staying within the agreed upon internship hours.
  • Serve as point of contact for students and internship placement supervisors if there are issues or challenges to work through and resolve.
  • Partner with the workforce development department to plan and facilitate professional development seminars for student interns.
  • Check in with each student intern and internship placement supervisor at least once during the summer in a one on one meeting.
  • Schedule and plan (with the SLI Director) the end of summer celebration.
  • Manage the SLI STEM Summer Internships Canvas page, uploading relevant resources and guidesheets and sending out regular announcements.
  • Track the scholarship payments for each student intern, each of whom may have a different payment schedule.
  • Other related tasks designated by the SLI Director

Term of employment: 6/21/21 - 9/17/21 (flexible start and end dates).
