Foothill College Offers Nano Materials Course (evening) for chemists, biologists, physicists, and engineers.

Foothill College will offer Introduction to Nano Materials Science (Nano-52) as well as our Introduction to Nanotechnology Course (Nano-51). Nano-52 provides the "nano" foundation for chemists, biologists, physicists, and engineers to become familiar with how to take metals, ceramics, glasses, and polymers, and form small and large devices, ranging from biomedical stents to carbon nanotubes for aerospace applications.

Nano-52 will introduce students to the world of nano materials - how metals, ceramics, glasses, and polymers are designed, fabricated, and modified, to make industrially important materials. Key applications include automotive, aerospace, biomaterials, and the exciting new world on nanostructures and nanomaterials. Our scenario-based learning includes a look at the engineering challenges for inexpensive solar panels, and how fuel cells can be designed to work with a flexible fuel stream.

Dr. Jill Johnsen received a BS in Physics from Cal Poly in1999, and recently completed a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from UC Davis in March 2006 with an emphasis on the electronic properties and characterization of nanocrystalline ceramics. Through Teaching Assistantships at Cal Poly and UC Davis (1998-2005) and a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Exploratorium, San Francisco, Jill has had the opportunity to create educational programs and implement them in innovative ways. Jill has always been intensely interested in science and technology education and is looking forward to the opportunity to expand her teaching abilities and communication skills while providing up to date information and ideas in the fields of Materials Science and nanotechnology
