Apprenticeship Division | Department Website
One of the primary components of the Sound and Communications Industry (also known as the low voltage industry) is Voice Data Video. Voice Data Video has been the fastest growing category in the sound and communications field. Other areas of this industry include Audio Video Systems, Security and Fire/Life Safety Systems, fiber networks, including LAN and WAN, building automation controls, wireless communication systems, television distribution systems, and closed circuit television. It is an evolving field with exciting growth potential. The apprenticeship program is an earn-while-you-learn program involving paid “full time” work and related classes.
Students gain expertise and hands-on experience as they work on sound and communication systems to include voice systems, data systems, video systems, fire alarm systems, home alarm systems, data networking systems, cabling and automation systems. These specialized skills are acquired through on-the-job training and classroom instruction and lead to employment in the construction and service industry. After three years of classroom and work experience students are recognized as journeypersons in the sound and communication trade for the electrical industry.
Upon completion of all course requirements and 2000 hours of related work experience, graduates will be recognized as Journeyman Sound and Communication Installers. Depending upon the student’s career interest and courses taken, graduates may find employments as a: sound and communication installer, telecommunication technician, network technician, field installer, sound and communication technician, network specialist, field tester, cable splicer, security and alarm technician, foreman/supervisor, fiber optics installer or field inspector.
