The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore is the delightful account of three women who have been the closest of friends since the 60’s.  Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat was the first black-owned business in Plainview, Indiana and served as the gathering place for the three main characters with their friends and families.   Their stories run the gamut from tragic to poignant to hilarious.  Moore’s muses are his mother, sister, aunts, and cousins who must be as dynamic and vibrant as the protagonists they inspired.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman is his first novel for adults since Anansi Boys (2005) but could easily be classified as young adult.  This tale of magic and remembrance is highly captivating with its unnamed narrator reminiscing about childhood terrors, dubious realities, and unexpected saviors.  Gaiman’s language is exquisitely rich and his characters darkly intense.  Despite his immense achievements in several genres, Gaiman revealed his insecurity in a commencement address at the University of Arts in Philadelphia: “The first problem of any kind of even limited success is the unshakable conviction that you are getting away with something, and that any moment now they will discover you.”

The Circle by Dave Eggers was frightening enough on its own merits, but subsequent news coverage of compromised data, security breaches, and techno-terrorism raises questions as to the line between fiction and fact in this gripping tale.  The setting is a stunningly high end/high tech campus located in the Bay Area and readers will inevitably think of Google, Facebook, and Twitter.  Eggers is the George Orwell of our times.
