VoiceThread in Canvas

Learn how to integrate and use VoiceThread in your Canvas course.

VoiceThread Account

If you do not have a VoiceThread account associated with your Canvas email address, a new account will automatically be created the first time you access VoiceThread from within Canvas. Your username will be the email address that is associated with Canvas.

To access your VoiceThread account directly from VoiceThread, outside of Canvas, for the first time you will have to create a password. Setting a password will not affect access to VoiceThread from within Canvas. On the VoiceThread 'Sign in' page click on the 'Need password?' link to create a new one.

If you have an existing VoiceThread account where your username is not the same as your Canvas email, you will have to contact VoiceThread to reconcile the account if you would like to access your VoiceThreads from that account.

Using VoiceThread in Canvas

If you use an embedded VoiceThread in your Canvas page, it will NOT authenticate the student and they will be prompted to log in. It is best to use the External Tool to add a VoiceThread to your course because it will automatically authenticate the student. If you would still like to use the embedded VoiceThread, then make sure to have students click on the External Tool first and then have them go back to the embedded VoiceThread.

Using a Rubric

If you want to use a Canvas rubric for the assignment, you must add the rubric before setting the External Tool submission type. Create the assignment with any other submission type, save the assignment, add the rubric, and then edit the assignment to select the External Tool and VoiceThread.

When you click on a VoiceThread link, you see a page titled "VoiceThread Account Verification"

This means that you already had a VoiceThread account under your email address, and the system is now trying to connect that existing account with your Canvas profile. You'll only need to complete this step once. To proceed through this page:

  • Click on the link that says "Set it here" to set a verification password for your account.
  • Proceed through the steps to set a password. This will involve receiving an email from VoiceThread.
  • Use that password you just set on the verification page.
