Run the Computer Readiness Test to test your browser and see what plug-ins you might need.

We highly recommend updating to the newest version of whichever browser you are using, as well as the most up-to-date Flash plug-in.

Supported browsers as of April 8, 2015:

  • Firefox 36 and 37 (Extended Releases are not supported)
  • Chrome 40 and 41
  • Internet Explorer 10 and 11
  • Safari 7 and 8
  • Flash 15 and 16 (for recording or viewing audio/video and uploading files)

Some supported browsers may still produce a banner stating Your browser does not meet the minimum requirements for Canvas. If you have upgraded your browser but you are still seeing the warning banner, try logging out of Canvas and deleting your browser cookies. Please contact the Foothill Online Learning Help Desk if you need assistance with clearing your cache and cookies.

Required Components

Flash is required in several places in Canvas: media recording/streaming and viewing as well as uploading files to a course or an assignment. Other than these features, Flash is not required to use most areas of Canvas.

The Java plug-in is required for screen sharing in Conferences. Please note that some browsers do not support Java. Otherwise, there are no other browser plug-ins used by Canvas.

When you log in to Canvas, the first thing you will see is the dashboard. If this is your first time in Canvas, you will see your courses shown as color-coded cards. This is the default view. You navigate to your course by clicking on the card.

Note: You can also change the dashboard to another view which will show the recent activity but not your courses. To toggle between these views, click on the button located at the top right of the content area.
If your course is not showing up as a card, you can find it by clicking on Courses in the global navigation bar.
In the side menu, click on 'All Courses' to see a list of all of your courses. Click on the course title to navigate to your course. If you would like it to appear in the dashboard as a color-coded card, click on the star next to the course title. To remove a course from the dashboard, uncheck the star.

Steps to locate a course not shown on the dashboard

  1. Click on Courses in the Global Navigation bar
  2. Click on the All Courses link
  3. Find your course and click on the star to make it a favorite so that it will shown on the dashboard
  4. Click on the title of the course to navigate to it
