Women's softball team takes on Sacramento in round one of state playoffs
The women's softball team is taking on Sacramento City College in the first round of the state playoffs. The best of three series will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6 on the Foothill College softball field.
The first game will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday and the second at 12 p.m. on Saturday. If necessary, a third game will follow at 2 p.m. Congratulations to our Lady Owls!

Foothill student trustee fights for student rights on and off campus
In March, Foothill College student trustee Courtney Cooper received the Rising Star award at the 2017 Women of the Year of Senate District 15 event, hosted by Senator Jim Beall.
As a foster youth and current community college student, it's great that a representative who has advocated for both of those communities has taken notice of my work in recent years," said Cooper.
Cooper was advocating for students long before she was elected student trustee. Last year, as vice president of the Associated Students of Foothill College, she fought for a food bank on campus. She advocated for an Umoja Community on campus and chaired the
Black History Month planning committee. Through her work with the ASFC, Cooper got involved with the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC). She is currently president of the statewide organization.

Second spring registration now open; classes start May 22
This spring, Foothill is offering both a regular spring quarter and a second spring session, which replaces what was formerly known as early summer. Second spring classes start on Monday, May 22. The class schedule for both regular and second spring
is available on the college website and in MyPortal.

Spring graduation deadline: June 1
Please remind students that the deadline to petition for spring graduation is Thursday, June 1. Students intending to graduate are responsible for scheduling a required 30-minute petition consultation with a counselor. Appointments may be scheduled
online or via phone.

Planning and Resource Council (PaRC) Update

PROGRAM CREATION PROPOSAL - SOCIAL JUSTICE ADT: PaRC approved the creation of a new ADT in social justice. Students may choose from one of three emphases: general social justice studies, gender and sexuality, or race and ethnicity.
FACULTY OUT-OF-CYCLE REQUEST - LIBRARY: Due to specialization of the position, there was continued discussion whether or not the request met the criteria for an emergency hire as opposed to an out-of-cycle. The request is the result of a retirement and
library staff believe hiring adjuncts to fill the position would be challenging. PaRC approved the out-of-cycle request. It will now be forwarded to president's cabinet.
FACULTY EMERGENCY REQUEST - RESPIRATORY THERAPY: The program's director of clinical education has resigned, effective May 31 and the program must have a director per the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. PaRC approved the emergency request.
It will now be forwarded to president's cabinet.
MISSION STATEMENT PROPOSAL: ACCJC, the college's accrediting body, requires that the college's mission statement reflect that it offers a baccalaureate degree. PaRC approved the following revised statement (revisions noted in italics):

DISTRICT ASSESSMENT RE-TEST POLICY: Andrew LaManque presented a revised district assessment re-test policy: After taking a placement test at either college, students may retake the English, ESL, reading, or math test one time at either college, not both,
within a six-month period of the initial date of placement. However, students cannot retest in subject if they have earned a D, F, NO, or I grade in the subject/course sequence in which they are seeking a new placement.

Farmers' market on wheels heading to campus
Farmers' markets are popping up left and right and Foothill is joining the movement! Beginning this week, a "farmers' market on wheels" will be parked in the Campus Center Plaza (near the bookstore) on Thursdays from 1 p.m.-2
p.m. All of the produce is sourced from local California farms and they accept EBT.

Astronomy Lecture: The Sky Event of the Decade
On May 24, astronomy professor Andrew Fraknoi will give a non-technical talk on the rare eclipse of the sun that will be visible throughout the U.S. this summer. The talk will describe how eclipses work, why

Foothill College Astronomy Professor Andrew Fraknoi will be "performing" with the Peninsula Symphony during their concerts on Friday, May 19and Saturday, May 20, The Symphony is doing an astronomy themed concert featuring Gustav
Holst's The Planets Suite and Nancy Bloomer Deussen's newer composition called Transit of Venus. Fraknoi will introduce both pieces and explain the astronomy behind them, and has provided beautiful images from recent
space exploration and telescopes to accompany the music.
