Commencement is less than a month away! This year's ceremony will take place on Friday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m. Please pay special attention to the start time which is different than in years past.

Those participating are asked to meet inside the Smithwick Theatre at 5:45 p.m. There will be signs directing you to your respective area. At 6:15 p.m., participants will queue up for the processional and depart no later than 6:30 p.m. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 1.5 hours and will conclude with a Corridor of Honor (follow your section leader's direction). A reception will take place immediately following the ceremony in the Bookstore Plaza.

In mid-May, Governor Jerry Brown released his May Revision to the proposed 2015-16 budget.  The actual revenues that have accrued to the state treasury over the course of the current fiscal year have significantly outpaced estimates made at the time of the Governor's January proposal.  Key highlights of the Governor's revised budget relevant to the California Community Colleges are as follows:

• $49.7 million to increase access from 2 percent to 3 percent ($156.5M total for 2015-16)
• Decrease of $31.3 million to reflect a downward adjustment in the COLA from 1.58% to 1.02%
• $75 million to support an increase in full-time faculty hiring.
• $141.7 million in additional funds for support of district general operating expenses, bringing the proposed total to $266.7 million for the 2015-16 fiscal year
• $274.7 million in additional one-time funds to pay down prior mandate obligations, bringing the proposed total to $626 million.
• $148 million for deferred maintenance and instructional equipment. $60 million in one-time funds for the Basic Skills and Student Outcomes Transformation Program
• $2.5 million to fund the COLA for the EOPS, DSPS, CalWORKs, and the Childcare Tax Bailout programs
• $2 million in one-time funds for a pilot program to foster collaboration between colleges and CSU campuses relating to basic skills instruction for incoming CSU students

The Governor's proposal to increase funding for the California Community Colleges at the May Revision is excellent news.  However, it is important to remember that  colleges have not yet fully recovered from the bad times.  College operational budgets are still approximately $750 million below where they were, accounting for inflation.  Furthermore, college budgets will face additional stresses in the coming years, as PERS and STRS obligations are scheduled to increase rapidly and the state faces the sunset of Proposition 30 revenues. 

The Foothill College Medical & Dental Brigades Club is hosting a screening of Code Black, an award-winning documentary which provides viewers with a look inside America's busiest ER. The screening takes place tonight, June 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Appreciation Hall (room 1500). A suggested donation of $10 or any individual size (1-2 oz) size toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, sunscreen is appreciated. No RSVP is necessary.

 

The Theatre Arts Department is presenting its production of Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. Written by Tony Kushner, the production is directed by Bruce McLeod and will be on stage through Thursday, June 18 in the Lohman Theatre.

Former Music Technology student Devin Thomas recently won an "Outstanding Community College Composition" Award from the Downbeat Student Music Awards for his composition No Victor in Chance. Thomas is currently a saxophonist with the 399th Army Band at Fort Leonard, Missouri.  He hopes to continue taking classes online while he serves.  

 

The Downbeat Student Music Awards are the most prestigious awards for college students majoring in contemporary music.  Founded nearly 35 years ago, Foothill now joins the ranks of colleges and universities such as Julliard, The Eastman School of Music, and The University of Miami. This is Foothill's first award.

The Asian/Pacific American Network (APAN) is hosting its annual CelebrAsian event on Friday, June 26 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. in the Dining Hall. During the ceremony, faculty and staff will honor students of Asian and Pacific Islander ancestry who are graduating, transferring, or completing certificates. The event will include scholarship award presentations and the ever-popular Foothill College Faculty and Staff Taiko Drummers.

The Foothill College United Nations Club is in need of a new faculty advisor. The club, which aims to increase students' awareness of global issues, typically meets on Wednesdays at 1 pm. If interested, please contact Student Activities at extension 7218.

Foothill College dental hygiene students collaborated with the Medical & Dental Brigades Club and organized the college's Fourth Annual Walk for Oral Cancer Awareness. The walk, held on April 19, raised nearly $10,000 for the Oral Cancer Foundation. The Vice-Mayor of Mountain View was on-hand to welcome walkers and Foothill College EMT students provided first-aid students.

Former Foothill College Honors Student Adrian Rahardja transferred to Harvard University, where he received a degree in economics. Since receiving his degree, he has held several positions as a financial analyst and currently manages a sales and analytics team for Twilio, Inc., a San Francisco-based firm that merges cloud computing, telecommunications and web services. Adrian is fluent in Indonesian, Vietnamese, German, Dutch, and English.
