Based on the English language arts survey you have been
directed to the English for Second Language Learners Pathway. This pathway will
support student whose native language is not English. ESLL at Foothill College
offers both non-credit and for-credit courses with five levels of courses to
meet the needs of our students.
Free Non-Credit
Courses (Level 1-2)
For students who need practice in English to communicate
better at home, at work, or in the community
Our non-credit ESL courses (level 1–2) are free of charge
and designed to help English language learners develop their general ability to
understand, speak, read and write English
Academic For-credit
ESL Courses (level 3–5)
For students who need academic English for their career, or
to obtain a certificate/college degree, or students seeking to transfer to a
four-year college/university
Requires registration and unit fees
Students who complete the ESLL sequence will be prepared to
do well in English 1A. Universities look very closely at English Composition
(ENGL1A) and Critical Thinking (ENGL1B) grades and expect students to have
above-average grades in these courses.
To help you decide which ESLL level you should take, you
will complete leveled self-diagnostics. In each diagnostic, you will reflect on
your English ability and be given a recommendation based on your
self-diagnostic.
In the end, choose classes based on our recommendation or you can decide which ESLL level is right for you!
