This is a unique initiative that matches students majoring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) fields with internships at local universities and private companies.
This is the seventh year (2019) the internship program has helped students gain real world experience in laboratories to conduct cutting-edge research in various fields of science, as well as make connections with scientists and industry officials
Paid STEM Summer Internship
You'll receive up to eight weeks of professional mentoring and hands-on experience at a Bay Area science research institution or technology company.
This multi-disciplinary program will be recruiting from the STEM sciences, with special focus on the following majors:
- Biological sciences
- Computer sciences
- Paid hands-on experience in biology, chemistry, computer science, or engineering,
- Personal mentoring in lab skills, presentation skills, resume and professional network building.
Must have completed 12 units of STEM courses at Foothill by the end of Winter quarter of the current academic year (Any science, technology, engineering or math course).
Must be a STEM major
Must demonstrate how this internship opportunity will help you reach your goals in a supplemental question.

SnapDNA is a Mountain View startup with transformative technology for food safety. SnapDNA has reduced food-borne pathogen detection test times to under 2 hours by eliminating the need for cell culture. Current culture-based test practices require 2 or more days from sample-to-answer.
SnapDNA uses DNA aptamers to bind pathogen cells from environmental sample (ES) swabs such as are used in standard food processing industry facilities. While current practice for ES normally entails a 2 day cell culturing step prior to analysis (usually by PCR), SnapDNA developed a process that takes just over an hour, including PCR.
We are looking for motivated, detail-oriented individuals interested in gaining highly relevant laboratory experience in a dynamic startup environment. The intern would report directly to me. We provide all requisite training, however, background in biochemistry, chemistry, and /or molecular biology is advantageous. We are a cross-disciplinary group, and we all have found ourselves wearing a variety of "hats" while we use tools that span typical wet lab (UV spec, centrifuges, pH meters, PCR thermocyclers,) as well as table-top milling machine, 3-D printer, pumps, valves.
We work to advance the careers of our interns, such as by sharing general pointers on laboratory critical thinking, experiment execution, organization and experiment design, practical laboratory tips and tricks. We offer general advice on interviewing, resume building, career topics, graduate school, and are able to offer introductions to others in our field.
This opportunity is available immediately and openings are typically available all year long. Duration of internship is 8 weeks or longer (preferred). Our past interns have successfully transitioned to graduate school and to employment at other companies.
