Application Process

ADVISORY NOTE: Foothill was given initial approval to participate in the pilot program by the 13-member California Community Colleges Board of Governors in consultation with representatives from the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems. Foothill College will award Bachelor's degrees to Dental Hygiene students who complete the state's baccalaureate degree pilot program, which is tentatively scheduled to start in Fall 2016. The program will continue to award the Associate of Science degree until the final approval process is in place for the Bachelor's degree. Please review the Dental Hygiene application page for details for prerequisites and application information.

Please follow application instructions carefully, by enclosing ALL documentation (transcripts, petitions, etc.) in ONE envelope with the current 2016 Dental Hygiene application. Complete the application in a word-processed format, not handwritten. Complete all the tables in the application; do not leave blanks. If you have a course that is in progress, list it and put the date you will complete the course.

Selective admission into the Dental Hygiene Program is based on the following with a grade of "C" or higher:

  • high school graduation or equivalency,
  • grades of "C" or higher in all prerequisite courses,
  • * AHS 200 and * DH 200L,
  • eligibility for ESLL 26 or ENGL 1A;, or 1S & 1T, or equivalent,
  • a cumulative college grade point average of 2.5 or higher,
  • a cumulative science college grade point average of 2.75 or higher,
  • English composition, reading, critical thinking (2 quarters or semesters) - coursework equivalent to ENGL 1A, 1B; also permit 1AH, 1BH, 1CH, 1S & 1T, and ESLL 26, C-ID equivalents are C-ID ENGL 100, 105, 110)
  • Introduction to Speech or Communication (1 quarter or semester) - must be a transferable course- coursework equivalent to COMM 1A or COMM 1AH
  • Introduction to Sociology (1 quarter or semester) - coursework equivalent to SOC 1 (C-ID descriptor is C-ID SOCI 110)
  • General Psychology (1 quarter or semester) - coursework equivalent to PSYC 1, C-ID descriptor is C-ID PSY 110
  • A multicultural or ethnic studies course
  • Health (1 quarter or semester) - coursework equivalent to HLTH 21, C-ID descriptor is pending
  • Statistics (1 quarter or semester) - coursework equivalent to MATH 10, C-ID descriptor is C-ID MATH 110
  • General Anatomy and Physiology with labs (1 year) - coursework equivalent to BIOL 40A, 40B, 40C C-ID descriptor is C-ID BIOL 155 S or C-ID BIO 110B and 120B
  • Survey of Inorganic, Organic and Biochemistry with labs (2 quarters or semesters) - coursework equivalent to CHEM 30A & 30B
  • Human Nutrition (1 quarter or semester) - must be a transferable course coursework equivalent to BIOL 45, C-ID descriptor is C-ID NUTR 110
  • Microbiology with lab (1 quarter or semester) - must be a transferable course,, coursework equivalent to BIOL 41, No C-ID descriptor yet

*AHS 200 and DH 200L are offered online every quarter to accommodate students from out of the area.

A limited number of prerequisites may be in progress at the time the application is submitted; however all prerequisites must be completed before an applicant begins the Dental Hygiene program.
