Joy Holland, MFA
Fine Arts and Communication Division
Joy Holland is an interdisciplinary artist and designer with research interests in contemporary urban revitalization. She has created permanently and temporarily-sited projects and proposals, including those commissioned by: the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of Los Angeles, CA; the City Cultural Association of Pero, in Milan, Italy; the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles, CA; and Scottsdale Public Art in Scottsdale, AZ. Joy’s other projects include architecture commissions for environmentally sustainable buildings by Ray Kappe and Whitney Sanders in Los Angeles. She fabricates her own work using concrete construction, welding, carpentry, computer-aided drafting and modeling, and other specialized techniques and materials. For large-scale projects, Joy works with crews of skilled collaborators and assistants. She really enjoys teaching students how to fabricate in welding, carpentry, construction and installation techniques.
Joy is an arts recipient of a U.S. Fulbright grant to Italy through the U.S. Department of State. She has delivered public lectures and presentations about her work at universities in both North America and Europe, as well as the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, in Rome, Italy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also in Rome, Italy. Joy graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Temple University Tyler School of Art. She graduated with her Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she was the recipient of the UCLA Graduate Opportunity Fellowship and, after completion of her M.F.A. degree, was hired as an instructor of record in the Department of Art. With an academic background in art history, concentrated in architecture and urbanism, Joy has also enjoyed teaching a range of art history courses, in addition to courses in art and design. Previous to her Foothill College faculty appointment, Joy was a professor and resident artist at the University of West Florida (UWF). She had also previously lectured at Cornell University and Temple University campuses in Rome, Italy. Joy teaches subjects in the visual arts, design, architecture, art history and research & writing.
