Is there a charge for Placement?
There is no charge for placement testing in chemistry, English, English Second Language Learner (ESLL) or mathematics for Foothill College. There will be a $25 charge to test for placement at another college.
Do I need to make a reservation? Yes - Yes - but if you are unable to use the appointment system, call 650-949-7743 for assistance.

May I use my transcript from another college instead of attending a placement session?
Yes, bring either an official or unofficial transcript to your Counseling Appointment.
May I use my test scores from another college?
Yes, but only if the test you took was administered through "Accuplacer". Bring your Accuplacer test scores to the Testing Office (room 8212) or email valid test scores results as an attachment to:
What do I need to bring to the assessment session? PHOTO identification such as a driver’s license, passport or student body card.
STUDENT ID (or social security number).
May I use a dictionary?
Yes, but only ESL translation dictionaries are allowed and only for the Math and Chemistry tests.
May I use a calculator during the math assessment session?
May I use a calculator during the chemistry assessment session?
Yes, but only for the chemistry test. We will provide the calculator to be used.
May I test from out of the area? Yes, if you are near an assessment center; check the following site for the locations: Request that the proctor at the center email for further instructions.
How do I find my placement results? Placement results are available through the "MyPortal" registration system at You will need to use your campus-wide ID and the password you created. Select the REGISTRATION tab, and then "Placement Test Results". For privacy reasons, results may not be given over the phone. If you do not have access to the internet at home, come to the Student Success Office at the main campus in the Student Services Building, Room 8100.
Can I retake the test? Yes, but only within these timelines:
English test: once every 365 days
ESL test: once every 365 days
Math test: You may take the same Math Placement test a second time after waiting 24 hours but no later than 7 working days after your first attempt. You must enroll in the course printed on your report after the second attempt. Exceptions to this policy by permission of the Dean Physical Sciences, Math & Engineering only.
Chemistry test: once every 365 days.

ESL students students who would like to challenge their placement exam results should see the Dean of Language Arts to receive the Placement Challenge. The ESL faculty will administer the placement challenge. F1 students who would like to challenge their placement exam results should see the International Student Office.
Does Foothill offer Disability Accommodations for Placement Tests? Placement tests are available in alternate text format, such as Braille, audio tape, large print, and e-text.
