It's 1940s NYC with My Sister Eileen on Stage at Foothill College
Parking is $2; puchase permit from dispenser in parking lot.
"My Sister Eileen" travels from Ohio and NYC to the Foothill College Lohman Theatre Nov. 6 through Nov. 22, as the college's Theatre Arts Department stages its fall production. Performances are Nov. 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees are Nov. 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.

When two plucky sisters from Ohio move into a basement apartment in 1940s Greenwich Village, they discover much about life in the big city and each other. Filled with memorably quirky characters and a visit from the Brazilian Navy, this charmingly humorous play later became the basis of the musical hit Wonderful Town.

With Claire Slattery of Palo Alto as Ruth; and April Spain of Mountain View as Eileen; Foothill's My Sister Eileen includes Alex Barbieri and Beth Boulay of Campbell; Nick Boucher of Cupertino; Ernesto Garcia of East Palo Alto; Justin Heller of Menlo Park; Adam Magill, Nicolae Muntean and Juan Rizziolli of Palo Alto; Lori Ann Grass of Portola Valley; Doug Brees and Anna Rubchinskaya of Redwood City; AJ Jaffari, Steve Lambert and Annette Stenger of San Jose; Irma Durmisevic and Clifford Samoranos of Santa Clara; Brian Van Winkle of South San Francisco; Travis Bilenski of Sunnyvale; and Nathan Doughty of Woodside.

Written by Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov, the Foothill College production is directed by Marcia Frederick. The show includes scenic design by Bruce McLeod, costume design by Julie Engelbrecht, lighting design by Andrew Custer, sound design by Laura Mohamed, and properties design by Lori Basuino

Tickets are $16, general; $12 for students and seniors; and $8 for Foothill students with OwlCard. Foothill Authors Series Guest Speaker Nov. 30
Admission is free; parking is $2
The Foothill Authors Series features Guadalupe Valdés, author of Con respeto: Bridging the Distance Between Culturally Diverse Families & Schools, Monday, Nov. 30, at 3:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Hearthside Lounge (Room 2313). The book can be purchased at the Foothill Bookstore at a 20-percent discount. Staff and faculty can earn PGA/PAA credit for attending a Foothill Authors Series session.

Valdés is the Bonnie Katz Tenenbaum Professor of Education at Stanford University. Working in the area of applied linguistics, much of her work has focused on the English-Spanish bilingualism of Latinos in the U.S. and on discovering and describing how two languages are developed, used and maintained by individuals who become bilingual in immigrant communities.

She has investigated Latino students in elementary, middle school, high school and college leading to six books and more than 70 articles. Her book Con respeto: Bridging the Distance Between Culturally Diverse Families & Schools (Teachers College Press, 1996) examines the lives of K-3 English-language learners and their families. The book Learning & Not Learning English (Teachers College Press, 2001) follows four middle school students over a two-year period. Expanding Definitions of Giftedness: Young Interpreters of Immigrant Background (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2003) focuses on high school students who serve as young interpreters for their parents, and her last book, Developing Minority Language Resources: The Case of Spanish in California (Valdés, Fishman, Chavez & Perez, Multilingual Matters, 2006) examines Spanish language maintenance and instruction in both secondary and postsecondary institutions. Her book Bilingualism & Testing: A Special Case of Bias (Ablex Publishing Co.,1994) is seen as a timely classic that explores the growing challenge of increased use of standardized tests. Her most recent book, Steps in the Journey: Latino Children Learning English will be published by Teachers College Press in 2010.

Foothill College Theatre Arts Partners with Peninsula Youth Theatre to Stage Alice in Wonderland
Ideal for Bay Area Families
The Foothill College Theatre Arts Department and Peninsula Youth Theatre (PYT) fall down the rabbit hole together for a collaborative production of Alice in Wonderland, which plays Dec. 3 through Dec. 6 in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.

Performances are Dec. 3-4 at 10:15 a.m. (student matinee performances); Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.; and Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.

Adapted from Lewis Carroll by William Glennon, one of English literature's most beloved and bizarre tales is brought vividly to the stage as an adventurous and relentless little girl makes a fateful decision to follow the White Rabbit down its hole and into a wonderfully strange land--indeed a Wonderland--filled with mad tea parties, a cat that always grins, an impatient queen with some odd notions of how to play croquet and much more. Limited to just five performances, the Foothill/PYT production is directed by Foothill College Theatre Arts Instructor Tom Gough.

Featuring Fabienne Miskelly of Redwood City as Alice, the cast also includes Alex Barbieri of Campbell; Nick Boucher of Cupertino; Ernesto Garcia of East Palo Alto; Katie Chan, Sarah Tuthall and Jessica Yurash of Los Altos; April Spain of Mountain View; Will Marsden, Joshua Messick and Juan Rizziolli of Palo Alto; Lori Ann Grass of Portola Valley; Sarah Griner of Redwood City; Jacki Andresen and Nicole Williams of San Jose; and Jessica Lynn of Santa Clara.

The production designers are Agnes DeLucchi, costumes; Yuseke Soi, scenic; Mikael Lassi, lighting; Peter Kang, sound; with technical direction from Foothill College Music Technology Instructor Bruce McLeod.

Parking Lot 1 provides closest access to the Smithwick Theatre. Parking Lot 5 provides no-stair access to the theatre. Visitors must purchase the required parking permit for $2 from dispensers in lot.

Tickets are $8. Discounts are available for groups of 15 or more. To purchase tickets online, access www.foothill.edu/fa. To order by phone or for group purchases for Dec. 5-6 performances, call the Foothill College Box Office at (650) 949-7360. Comparatively recent is the Christmas tree, first set up in Germany in the 17th century.
