The Foothill College Respiratory Therapy Program has been named recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist (R.R.T.) Credentialing Success Award presented by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). In addition to the Foothill College Respiratory Therapy Program, 31 of approximately 440 programs in the United States met the award's rigorous criteria.

The award-winning programs were required to have three or more years of outcomes data; hold accreditation without a progress report; document R.R.T. credentialing success of 90 percent or above; and meet or exceed established CoARC thresholds for certified respiratory therapist credentialing success, attrition and positive (job) placement, according to CoARC President Stephen P. Mikles, Ed.S., R.R.T., F.A.A.R.C.

"This award is presented as part of CoARC's continued efforts to value the registered respiratory therapist credential as a standard of professional achievement," Mikles said. "From a program-effectiveness perspective, CoARC views the R.R.T. credential as a measure of a program's success in inspiring its graduates to achieve their highest educational and professional aspirations."

Under the leadership of Program Director Brenda Hanning, B.S., R.R.T., the two-year Foothill College Respiratory Therapy Program has a selective admissions process and annually enrolls approximately 30 students. Combing lecture, laboratory and hands-on experience at local hospitals, students learn to manage the ventilation of critically ill patients as well as provide acute and chronic care to patients with pulmonary disease. Upon successful completion of the 135.5-unit program, students earn the Foothill College associate in science degree and are eligible to take state and national licensure examinations.
