Organic Chemistry Offered in the Evening

Course is a Must for Students Considering Health Care Careers

If you’re considering a career in health care, you’ll need to complete an organic chemistry course. For the first time, Foothill will offer the two-quarter sequence CHEM 8A and 8B: Organic Chemistry courses in the evening when Winter Quarter classes get under way Jan. 8. The courses are transferable to most four-year institutions and should be taken by students who are considering a career in biology, medicine, veterinary medicine, chiropractic medicine, dentistry, nutrition or related fields. Students who already have a college degree and are changing careers to a health field are especially advised to take this course. Students who enroll in this two-quarter course sequence will meet Mondays from 5:30 to 7:20 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Students will focus on the basic topics of organic chemistry with an emphasis on the structure, nomenclature, properties and reactions for each major class of organic compounds. Fundamental facts and theories of organic chemistry, bonding and structural theories for carbon, and relevant chemical reactions in medicine, dentistry, biology, nursing, nutrition and pharmacology will also be explored. During the course’s lab component, students will learn basic laboratory techniques, including distillation, extraction, chromatography and spectroscopy.

Foothill Choirs: We Want You Voice to be Heard

An Exciting Outlet for Your Creativity

Foothill starts the new year by re-igniting its long and superior legacy of great college choirs. Under the new and dynamic leadership of Music Performance & Choral Activities Instructor Lydia Oey, Foothill now offers two opportunities for your voice to be heard by participating in our concert choir or chamber singers. Both choirs are fun, invigorating, and a great creative outlet and escape from the day-to-day grind of Silicon Valley.

Students can enroll in the MUSP 19: Concert Choir course that meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 2:20 p.m. or the MUSP 28: Chamber Singers class that meets Monday evenings from 7 to 9:50 p.m.

New Language Arts Classes Appeal to Variety of Interests

Students of all reading and writing abilities can now choose from a variety of interesting Foothill language arts courses taught by outstanding faculty members. Most literature, creative writing, foreign language and linguistics courses fulfill university transfer requirements.

Literature classes offered this winter include Poetry, African- American Literature, Myth in Literature, The Bible as Literature, Survey of English Literature, Survey of American Literature and a field trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland in late March.

If you’d rather try your hand at creative writing, enroll in the advanced short story writing course. Or, if the concept of language appeals to you, enroll in the ENGL 26: Language, Mind & Society linguistics class. Students in this class study methods of linguistic analysis and concepts of psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics. In addition, Foothill will offer its new GERM 34: The Wild 20s—Germany from 1918-1933 course this quarter. Using literary texts, students will explore the historical, political and cultural developments in Germany during the Weimar government years that preceded the National Socialist Nazi Party.
