Instructors New Textbook Brings
Astronomy Down to Earth
|
Foothill College Astronomy Instructor Andrew Fraknoi has written Voyages to the Planets, a new textbook co-authored with NASA-Ames Research Center Chief of Space Science David Morrison and National Observatories Director Sidney Wolff. In addition to detailing the latest discoveries in planetary exploration, the authors say the book is the first planetary textbook with jokes, analogies, humor and accessible writing.
Fraknoi will teach ASTRO 10A: An Introduction to Our Solar System and Other Planetary Systems using the new textbook and his collection of slides from NASA and telescopes around the world when Winter Quarter classes get under way Jan. 3. A background in science is not required for this class. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Foothill College Observatory to view planets through several telescopes.
Fraknoi is the only community college astronomy instructor in the nation to have an asteroid named after him. He has received the Annenberg Foundation Prize of the American Astronomical Society and the Klumpke-Robert Prize of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, the two highest national honors in astronomy education and popularization.
